Edgar Allan Poe Yates, A.B., of Stoughton, Mass., elected a resident (annual) member in 1905, was born at Biddeford, ME 1 March 1856, the son of Edward Millwood and Rose Ann (Skillin) Yates, and died at Stoughton 3 October 1929. HIs great-grandfather, William Yates, was born in 1772, probably in Scotland, came to this country when a young man, married at Minot, ME, Martha Morgan, and settled in what is now Greenwood, ME where he died in 1868. His grandfather, Moses Yates, 1805-1890, married Martha Whittle. His father, Edward Millwood Yates, who was born at Greenwood, ME 28 December 1830, married at Ellsworth, ME 9 Jun 1852 Rose Ann Skillin, born at Westbrook, ME 11 December 1830, the daughter of Josiah and Sarah (Libby) Skillin.

Abstract from The Skillin Book by Yates, p 2:

Josiah Skillin, b 1791, was 26 years old when he married Sarah (Sally) Libby, who was then only 16 years old. He was a farmer at Stroudwater and in Scarborough until he was nearly 50 years old. He then removed to Biddeford and engaged in heaving teaming with an ox team and later with a two-horse team. About 1849 he removed to Portland, and from there to Gray, then back to Biddeford. When nearly 70, broken in health, he and Sarah removed to Danville, ME to live with their son, Woodbury. Thereafter they kept house in Lewiston for a few months, then lived with son Hiram and daughter Julia (with whom he was living when he died). Josiah was a tall, robust, slow-moving, slow-spoken man with a long face, small blue eyes, and a "touchy" disposition. Sarah, dtr of Nathan and Abigail (Davis) Libby, was a brisk, dark-eyed, small woman, a mother of 15 children and proud of them. Sarah is buried in the family lot in Biddeford. Roswell Skillings of Brockton has framed pictures of each both Josiah and Sarah.

Notes by Edgar Yates: Aunt Julia Reed's marriage date is wrong by several days, so other errors are possible. A family record in grandmother's (Sarah) own hand, now owned by Charles Skilling of Saco, has these variations: "Julia" - "Lorenzo" -- "Mary A. Sprole of Gray" -- "Jane Doughty Black of Gray" -- "Almon L. (married Mary Emah (of) Wells" A record in my mother's (Rose Ann) reads "Julia A." and "Jennett N." And both these two records vary now and then in exact dates, from the Bible record and from each other.
