Abstract from Family Records of Vivian Mellish
Wesley wrote his mother about every week while serving his country in the Armed Forces. One of the letters (dtd 13 Apr 1917) was just after the caputre of Vimy Ridge:
"We were only in (the trenches) four days, and that was quite long enough. We were over the top to see 'Fritz' this time, and believe me, he got what was coming to him. The advance was made on a twenty mile front and our brigade captured Vimy Ridge, which was supposed to be one of the strongest positions held by the Germans on the whole Western Front. It was certainly a great day for all the Canadians. ... It was great fun for us to clean out 'Fritz's' dug-outs, - if they saw you standing in the mouth of a dug-out with a rifle and bayonet, they would come out mighty quick, and it was 'Mercy, Comrade', right away. I cannot tell you how many prisoners were taken but it was a great lot. I will never forget Easter Monday, as that was when we started over at six o'clock in the morning. There were lots of shells dropping around us but I was lucky enough to escape everything and come out unhurt. The day was wet and dirty, but that didn't matter. We kept on pushing through the mud and shell fire until we reached our objective, where we dug holes to crawl into, and made ourselves as comfortable as possible. ... It was mighty cold and disagreeable holding the front line until we got relieved, but after a couple of night's sleep we felt as good as new." The letter closes with the assurance that things look better on the Western Front than every before. (This letter was among the things kept by his mother and is now in the possession of Bernice Anthony Martin).
His last letter was dtd 18 Aug 1917. He said they would be leaving the town where they were resting soon (from an hour to two days) whenever they got the call to go. They would be going back to the trenches. He died only one week later, on 26 Aug 1917, from wounds to the abdomen. He underwent surgery in the Military Hospital in Bethune Town, France, but did not survive. He is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery (C-124, Plot 6, Row G, Grave 24) (Imperial War Graves Commission).
