The Henderson Family---ca 1758 - present

William and Agnes Henderson are very mysterious people----not mysterious as in they hid and were elusive, but mysterious as in you never quite knew what they were going to do.

There are several William and Agnes lines out there being researched and they are easy to mix up. The main line that people want to connect this line with, is the line of William and Agnes Kearns Henderson. People automatically want to say that Agnes' surname was Kearns. This will personally have to be proven to me, as I do not think Agnes' surname was Kearns. There is a possibility that William and Agnes Kearns Henderson are the parents of this William and Agnes Henderson tho.

This line of Henderson's by family lore, and I mean OLD family lore, came to the United States in 1758, from Ireland, and they were to be of Scottish descent. They settled near Miffletown, then Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. This date is stated in numerous county histories, family biographies etc., written at different times, by different family members. We do not have a birth date for William or Agnes so that is a major stumbling block.

The reasons I do not believe the William and Agnes line of ours and the William and Agnes Kearns Henderson are the same is:

1. William and Agnes Kearns Henderson are reported in earlier Pennsylvania .........census' 2. Their one son (Kearns) is reportedly born in Pennsylvania in 1725 3. This line of Henderson's headed south into VA, NC, KY etc 4. The Henderson family was proud of their heritage, and family names .........followed traditionally through out the family. I have not found the Kearns .........name used in our line of Hendersons.

(NOTE: Through a recent development on the Henderson-L thru Rootsweb, it is now believed that Ms. Kearns name is SUSAN and not AGNES----IF indeed this is true, we need to venture to new surnames and discover what Agnes' surname is----)

I am open to ideas, suggestions and critisim on this, I just do not want to connect up with a family that is not ours. I do not want to chase a name for years, have volumes of miss information entered and for it to be wrong!! So until I have a name for our poor lonely Agnes, she will remain un-named and sooner or later, we will find the proper one!!

I have had a tremendous amout of help on this line. There are many wonderful people out there researching bits and pieces of this line and I appreciate their in-put and assistance more than words could ever say. Many years ago this line was being researched about as extensively as it is today by several people, they did a wonderful job researching this line and there are boxes upon boxes of research still being found by their descendents. A great deal of information from these reserchers years ago, was submitted to the Ancestral File. The names, dates and places received off ofthe AF are entered into my data base, but the source is stated as the AF, since the AF does not state sources. IF I have other sources for the information it is then stated, and the AF sourcing is removed. I have entered it in, in this manner so we would at least have an idea of a name, locality and year to double check and "prove". If the information was received from one of the many wonderful people working with me on this line, the source information is their name or names (if I remember to enter both!). If the information is found in a book, court house, newspaper etc. that information is entered. The source information received via look-ups done thru the GENWEB etc. it is stated by source and look-up volunteer.

I have pulled the descendency charts off of Family tree maker and copied them into these pages. I have alot more information on this family that is not stated in the pages. There are over 1700 family members in this data base, so it is broke down by family etc.

William and Agnes Henderson settled in Lewistown, Mifflin County, now Cumberland County Pennsylvania according to family lore in 1758 via Ireland. William was born ca 1719 in County Down Ireland, again family lore. William died abt May 1784, as his will was written May 11, 1784 and probated June 10, 1784. Agnes died after William as she is listed in his will but her death date, and their burials are still a mystery. The following children are listed in William's will (*** is not listed in the Will, but have references to her being his daughter):

James Henderson

James Henderson has really been a hard one to track. He possibly died young and did not follow the rest of the family to Ohio. I think we may of just made the connection to James' family August 15, 1998!!! Through a GENWEB look-up volunteer I received a address of a lady researching the William and Agnes Henderson line. Through correspondence we have concluded that her James and my "missing" James are one in the same. We are in the process of doing some further research to make sure so watch, wait and see. We may finally have our missing sibling!!!

Agnes Henderson Sharp

Agnes Henderson was born ca 1759. Agnes was to of married Joseph Sharp. They are to be buried at Taggart Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Belmont County, Ohio, but my researching only shows the burial of Joseph. But you know church records, Agnes could easily be buried there. The Sharp family inter-married with the Henderson family and followed the Henderson family to Ohio. Through OLD research that has been done, it is proven that Agnes is John Henderson's sister.

At this time, I have not had a chance to research this particular line, if you have any further information, I would love to talk with you!!

Margaret Henderson Wiley

Margaret Henderson has also been a confusing one in our tree. Is her name Margaret or Isabella or ??. According to the Will of William and Agnes Henderson, her name is Isabella, according to the Wiley research done, her name is Margaret. The Henderson's were great at the naming game, they used the same names over and over and over again. The name Isabella does not show up in any further generations, as Margaret does. Is Margaret a nick name? We shall wait and see!!
