Thomas and William Gillespie, two of the most enterprising and wealthy agriculturists of Belmont County, now residing on a large and attractive farm in Wheeling Township, are there by intelligence and skillful management carrying on a most successful industry. Marking a specialty of raising sheep and thoroughbred cattle, they have in these lines met with the most gratifying results. Both were born on the farm next to the one on which they now reside, Thomas on 25 Nov 1847 and William Calvin on 13 Feb 1852. They are of Scotch-Irish descent and the sons of Robert and Eleanor (Barnes) Gillespie.

Thomas Gillespie, grandfather of William, was born in the north of Ireland in Jun 1781. At an early date he came to America and settled in PA. Later, however, he came to OH and, purchasing a 90-acre farm in Wheeling Twp, remained there for the rest of his life. He d 20 Sep 1849. In 1803, while living in PA, he m Jane Love and they had 8 children:

Robert Gillespie, father of William Calvin, was b on the Belmont Co homestead Jan 1821. Following in the footsteps of his father, upon reaching manhood, he made farming the business of his life, carrying on the industry in Belmont County. He m Eleanor Barnes, d/o Peter Barnes of MD, they had five children. Of these,

(1) Joseph, b 12 May 1859, d of diptheria, then an epidemic in the county, 12 Nov 1861 at the age of 12 years; (2) John L., b 25 Nov 1854, a farmer and stock raiser near Harrisville, OH, m Louisa Green of Shepherdstown, d/o John Green, they have five children; (3) Nancy J. b 17 Aug 1855, m George Lyle, a farmer and stock raiser of Harrison Co, OH, residing near New Athens, they have six children; (4) Thomas; (5) William Calvin.

Thomas and William Calvin Gillespie were both reared in Belmont County and in the common schools of their neighborhood procured their education. Here by strict attention to business they became well grounded in the rudiments and William, upon leaving school, was enabled to follow teaching. He was very successful in his professional work and filled positions in Wheeling and Richland Twps for a period of 12 years. Later the two brothers turned their attention to agriculture, carrying on the farm, which they now possess and which was, at one time, owned by their grandfather immediately after his arrival from PA. Here they have erected new buildings and, from time to time, made other marked improvements. Besides this homestead, they own another large garm in the township where they now reside. Together the places embrace 312 acres, largely under cultivation, which the brothers are enabled to work to good advantage, engaging extensively in general farming. They make a specialty of Shorthorn cattle, Jerseys, Red and Poland-China hogs, and Blacktop, Delaine, or Pennsylvania sheep. Raising sheep they have found especially profitable and they now own about 400. Thomas Gillespie has never married, but resides with his brother. William Calvin m 7 Mar 1891 Lizzie Williams; however, they have no children.

The two brothers have exhibited to a remarkable degree shrewd business management and much practical ability in their farming, and have amassed considerable property. They are well known throughout the county and are highly esteemed. In national affairs they vote the Democratic ticket; in State politics they are liberal. The early Gillespies were Swedenborgians; the present generation are old school Presbyterians.

Abstract from Letter of Robert B. Gillespie to a Mrs. Gillespie dtd 30 Mar 1984:

Information on John Gillespie (aka John J.) is somewhat conflicting. Note the following from a book on Northern Pennsylvania: "John J., father of Robert B. Gillespie, was a native of Bellaire, Ohio, where he died at the age of 72 years." But the Centennial History of Belmont County, OH, where Bellaire is located, contains the statement: "John (Gillespie) lived in Shepherdstown, and died there in 1892." The difficulty with this is that the only Shepherdstown in the U.S. is in Jefferson County, WV in the extreme eastern portion of the state. It is believed that he was born in Washington Co, PA, before his father moved to OH.

This is what is shown in the 1860 census for Monroe Co, OH, along with his age in 1860 as 48, which would make him born c1812. The exact date of his birth is not known. He prob died in Bellaire c1884; although he may have died in Sistersville, WV, where his son Robert B. was living.

John married c1834 Tamar (?) and their first son, Robet B. was born c1835, prob in Wheeling Twp, Belmont, OH, although he is also stated to have been born in New Athens, which is just across the county line, in Harrison Co, OH. Other children were: George L. b c1838; Mary B. b 1841; Thomas E. b 1845; and John S. b 1847.

A descendant of Robert B. Gillespie, who also bears this name and lives in Lake Forest, IL, has investigated the family and the result of of his investigation is shown under Robert B. Gillespie (s/o John J.). Information is lacking as to the other children of John J. Gillespie, with the exception of a few facts shown below:

1. Robert B. b 2 Nov 1835 - see individual record for more ifo 2. George L. b 1838; resided Laings, Monroe Co, OH 3. Mary B. b 1841 4. Thomas E. b 1845 5. John S. b 1847; resided Pleasantville, Venango, PA.

A general directory of the oil regions of PA for the years 1872 and 1873 lists J.S. Gillespie as an engineer and his brother Robert B. as a driller at Bear Creek, both on p 267 of the directory.
