| Note* | 'L. J.' Leaster Merritt, dies; was former Faulkner clerk By RENEE HUNTER Log Cabin Staff WriterMonday, November 22, 1999 Former Faulkner County clerk "L.J." Leaster Merritt loved his family, loved people, loved to work and loved to talk, according to his only child, Kay Moss. Mr. Merritt, 83, of Greenbrier, died Sunday (Nov. 21, 1999) at his residence. "He had so many friends, I could hardly pick out the honorary pallbearers," she said. "He was as near perfect a dad as you could have." Mr. Merritt had been incapacitated since his first stroke in 1993, which occurred on Sunday after church. "It was hard on us to see him in that position," long-time friend Charles Freeman said. "He was such a vibrant, jubilant man. He was doing something all the time." Mr. Merritt was Faulkner County clerk from 1964 to 1978. While holding that position, he worked hard at his dairy farm both before and after his day at the courthouse, his daughter said. Jean Garrison, who worked under Mr. Merritt for four years as deputy county clerk, said he was diligent about the work, and extremely fair. "He treated everyone just the same -- rich or poor, black or white," she said. "He loved people and helped anybody that he could." But he always had time for his daughter and her friends. She recalls that he would pile all the young people into the pickup in the summer and take them to North Cadron Creek to swim. And in the winter when it snowed, he would hitch a big sled to the truck, pile on as many young people as would fit and pull them through the country lanes. Mr. Merritt believed in hard work, responsibility, a positive attitude, respect for elders, seeing the best in others and church attendance, and instilled all these traits in his daughter. "He could be hard as nails on me if I was wrong," Mrs. Moss said of her father. "Otherwise, he was soft as mush." He was a lifelong member of Greenbrier First Baptist Church, and besides attending faithfully on Sunday he was often at the church at other times, keeping the lawns mowed and the carpentry work done. "He had a heart for the poor," said Freeman. Mr. Merritt and his wife, Addie, visited the hospitals and the nursing homes every Sunday afternoon, according to Freeman. But Mr. Merritt was not all work. "He was a prankster," Freeman said. "He loved to pull tricks." The two often traded pulling practical jokes on each other, he added. He also delighted in his grandson, who played basketball at the University of Central Arkansas. Because he had not attended college, he was proud that his grandson did. "Daddy never missed a game," Mrs. Moss said. "He thought my son Jeff was the king of the mountain." Born Aug. 27, 1916, in Greenbrier, a son of the late John C. and Sarah May Merritt, he served as vice president of the 1936-37 senior class of Greenbrier High School, from which he graduated in 1937. He served in the Navy Seabees during World War II. Mr. Merritt was a member of Carpenters Local No. 690, a secretary-treasurer of the Association of Arkansas Counties for four years, a member of Greenbrier Lodge No. 290, where he was a 32nd degree Mason, and a Shriner beginning in 1970. He was a member of United Commercial Travelers of America, the Lions Club, and the Polled Hereford Association. He was a member of the Thorn Cemetery Association and the Cattlemen's Association boards. Mr. Merritt was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy and Elton Merritt; and a sister, Julia Henderson. Other survivors are his wife, Addie Vann Hartwick Merritt; a brother, J.C. Merritt of Greenbrier; a sister, Juanita Mobbs Vogan of Conway; two great-grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Greenbrier with the Rev. Marvin Loyd and the Rev. Kirk Hardy officiating. Burial will be in Thorn Cemetery.
