| Note* | 20 October 1997, Monday, October 20, 1997 Vet feels slighted when denied use of city center Last modified at 11:34 a.m. on Monday, October 20, 1997 By SARAH JORDAN Log Cabin Staff Writer A Faulkner County veteran participating in a six-week Veterans Administration exercise program says the group was wrongly denied access to Conway Sports Center. Leroy Turney of Greenbrier said he was told by city officials the exercise program might "interfere with something else" at the center, but contends the group was primarily denied because they are "a veteran group wanting to use the center." "I could use it if I didn't say I was a DAV (Disabled American Veterans) veteran, but six or eight of us" cannot go as a group, he said. Turney is one of approximately 30 veterans participating in a special exercise program funded through the Veterans Administration. According to Don Howard, VA physical therapist, the program is part of an ongoing fall-prevention study for veterans and their spouses age 60 and older. Sponsored by Fort Roots, the North Little Rock VA, Howard said the purpose of the program is "to show exercise can reduce falls among older adults." When setting up the program in Conway, Howard said Conway Sports Center was requested because of its walking track. Howard would not comment on why the group was turned away. Roden Berry, director of parks and recreation, was approached by the VA in September and told it wished to store some exercise mats at the center while conducting the program. "We have no room to store things," he said. Howard confirmed the VA wanted to stack several 5-foot wide, 7-foot long exercise mat tables against the wall at the center but said they would take up limited space. Berry added the city offered use of the McGee Community Center, because the exercise equipment could be stored there. Turney said the McGee Center was not acceptable because it has no air conditioning or walking track. Having the group use the walking track would not be a problem, Berry said. The track is open to the public on a first come, first serve basis, and any group can just sign in and walk as long as group members follow the rules for the track. When asked if any specific group would be turned away, Berry responded "no." Mayor David Kinley doesn't remember how he became aware of the situation but said he felt it was inappropriate to tie up Conway Sports Center for six weeks when the McGee Center was available. He also said he made that decision under the assumption the exercise group wanted the center all day. Missy Ellis, VA physical therapist supervising the program, conducts four exercise sessions throughout the day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Kinley denies the group was turned away because they are veterans. "Other veterans do use the center," he said. "I am a veteran -- Air Force, Pueblo crisis." Kinley also feels the situation has been resolved. He has talked to a few veterans and believes they understand why they were offered the McGee Center. The group is holding the exercise program at the DAV building on South Donaghey, but Turney said the track and equipment at Conway Sports Center are really needed. "There are other veterans' groups out there (at the center), but they say they are only senior citizens," Turney said. Berry said many different groups reserve the meeting room at Conway Sports Center and many older people use the walking track. Mrs. Ellis said the DAV building meets the group's needs except for the lack of a walking track. She usually supervises the walking portion of the program. In this case, however, the veterans walk during their own time at the University of Central Arkansas, Hendrix College, Conway Sports Center or in their neighborhoods, she said. | Note* | after 1915, Faulkner County, Arkansas, always cooked lunch for husband, Estes. The horses would rest from the plowing during the lunch break. She liked to cook pinto beans and would cook cornmeal mush. The family would eat it in the evening with milk, then in the morning after it had hardened, it would be formed into pattys and cooked (fried). Good stuff. Son David loved it. Salt, corn meal and water. Batter, milk and sugar. Fried mush tasted a lot like Fritos. She loved her kids. She would get up, build a fire, cook bisquits, fried bologna and pies for their lunches. Fried bologna bisquit sandwiches. The lunch would be wrapped in newpaper since there were no sacks. The kids couldn't wait for lunch |
