Five Perished in the Flames
Howe Brook, in Aroostook County, the Scene of a Most Horrible Castatrophe Saturday Morning.
Special to the Bangor Daily News
Houlton, Feb. 20--News reached this town Saturday morning that one of the most horrible catastrophes of recent years, occurred early Saturday morning in Howe Brook, a town about 40 miles from here and on the Ashland branch of the Bangor & Aroostook road. About 5:30 in the morning Samuel Antworth, a clerk for the Fish River Lumber Company, arose and bulit a fire in the kitchen stove. After getting the fire started, Mr. Antworth left his home and started for his work, leaving his wife and Mrs. John Shorey of Oakfield, who was visiting here at the time, up and about the house. Mrs. Antworth's two children and Mrs. Shorey;s child were still in bed. Mr. Antworth returned a few minutes later only to find his house a masss of flames and his family missing. How the fire orginated will probably never be known, It is thought that when Mrs. Antworth and Mrs. Shorey discovered the dwelling was on fire that they went up stairs to resscue their children and before the had time to arouse the little ones and carry them to safety the flames had gained such headway in the lower part of the house that they were unable to escap.
The dwelling was not plastered but only papered, conseqently the house was all in flames in less time that it takes to tell it. There was a springlock on the door leading from the kitchen down stairs and it is thought that the inmates of the house in endeavoring to make an exit through the door, were suffocated from smoke before they were able to get the door open as the bodies burned beyond all resognition were found in a heap on the floor of the kitchen and near the door. The dead are Mrs. Samuel Antworth of Howe Brook, aged about 22 years and her two children, a girl of three and a body one year of age.; Mrs John Shorey of Oakfield, aged about 25 years and her little daughter about five years of age. Mrs. Antworth and Mrs. Shorey were the daughters of James Crandall of Oakfield. Mrs. Shorey was the wife of John Shorey, who is proprietor of the Oakfield House in Oakfield.
