Miller




	John Miller arrived with his parents in America in 1833, a 14-year-old boy transplanted into a world where no doubt he neither spoke nor understood the language. They settled in Ohio.

	By the time he was 29 years old, John was living in Iowa. He and Anna Raber were married in Lee County, Iowa, which is in the southeastern tip of the state, on February 22, 1848. At the age of 36 years, John was granted U.S. citizenship in Lee County, Iowa on October 27, 1855.

	We don't know a great deal about John and Anna Miller. Anna was the daughter of Christian Raber. There are a number of Raber family histories which have been printed, and all are at a loss to explain Anna, other than that she was one of Christian's daughters by one of his three wives (Susannah Egli). The reason for this is more than likely because when John and Anna applied for their marriage license, her name was misspelled, and in the official records, is Rever. Christian, Anna's father, immigrated to America. Anna had nine brothers and sisters, but there is as little evidence of ongoing contact with her family as there is of John and his family. However, the affinity Anna felt for her own roots is witnessed in the middle "names" of her sons. All were given the middle name "Raber". Each of the sons used the middle initial "R." (as in Joseph R., John R., Jacob R., Chris R.) and one used the full name (Peter Raber Miller).

	The family was of the Mennonite faith.
