Oliver Castle5 #64/65 was born 8 Apr 1761 Roxbury, Litchfield Co., CT, son of Samuel4 CASTLE and Abigail NORTHROP. He married, either 17 Dec 1783(Strong Gen.) or 17 May 1784 (Cothren's Anc. Woodbury), Thankful STRONG, dau of Capt. Benajah STRONG and Jane COCHRANE(dau of Samuel COCHRANE of Woodbury). Oliver and Thankful had 2 children. Oliver died 17 June 1786 at the young age of 25. He made a will. Oliver's will If you will note the shaky handwriting, he was apparently ill and very weak at that time. He made his father, Samuel, the executor. I thought it neat that he gave his youngest son, Oliver(6) his silver shoe buckles.

Thankful married #2, 11 Sept 1788, Joel BACON and had 4 children by this marriage. They moved to Genoa, Cayuga Co., NY and Amos and Oliver were raised there. Thankful died 26 Nov 1836 in Cayuga Co., NY.

The Strong Genealogy lists both Amos and Oliver as being Baptist Clergymen. Originally, it appears, they were of the 1st. Cong'l. Church, then when their father died young, their mother, who was a Baptist by birth, probably raised them as such. Her second husband, Joel, was a Baptist also.

Children of Oliver and Thankful:

1. Amos b 24 Sept 1784 Roxbury,CT, d 24 Aug 1819, m 20 Sept 1806 Lydia Niles.
2. Oliver6 b 1 June 1786 Roxbury, CT (see Oliver6 below.)

Oliver Castle6 #32/33 was born 1 June 1786, Roxbury, Litchfield Co., CT, son of Oliver5CASTLE and Thankful STRONG. His father, Oliver5 died that same year, so young Oliver never had an opportunity to know him. His father left his silver shoe buckles to son, Oliver in his will. (See Oliver5 above). His mother remarried to Joel BACON, Baptist Clergyman on 11 Sept 1788. Oliver had an older brother, Amos, and 3 half-sisters, Sarah, Lucy and Cynthia; and one half-brother, Joel Jr., who were the children of Thankful and Joel. They may have lived somewhere near Middletown, CT. as they all appear on the 1790 census of Middletown, CT.

In 1793 Joel and Daniel Bacon and their families moved into N.Lansing, Cayuga Co. NY where Joel became a farmer near Lansingville. Joel had been a Baptist minister and apparently Oliver and Amos were brought up in this ministry also. They appear, again, in Milton, Cayuga Co., NY census.

Oliver must have met a Hiram Southwell near here, and also, his future wife, Charity BARNUM, whom he married 10 June 1805. She was the dau of Abel BARNUM and Hannah SHERWOOD of Genoa, NY. Charity was b 29 Feb 1788 Ridgefield, (Stratford), Fairfield Co., CT.

In 1803 a hurricane passed over the area of Hartland, Niagara Co., NY destroying everything in it's path for 1/2 mile. Oliver and an Isaac Southwell settled on this windfall. Oliver cleared the land with the assistance of his wife and Southwell. They cut trees and put up a small log house which they occupied for a number of years before building a farmhouse.

The year 1805, Oliver purchased land on the Holland Land Purchase, T15,R5(Hartland, Niagara Co., NY), then part of Cambria. His farm was located about 1 1/2 miles SW of Johnsons Creek. The farm remained the property of the Castle Family until the Spring of 1878. On this farm, there existed an ancient earthwork built by the Indians many years prior. This has been written about in the Niagara County Histories.

Oliver was one of the first settlers here, and the first preacher on the Holland Land Purchase, not ordained, but uniting with the Christian Church at Orangeport, also First Christian Church at Royalton and Hartland, at age of 19. There is a plaque noting this at Orangeport Church at the present time.Oliver's Plaque

Oliver was elected as one of the four town assessors in Cambria 3 Apr 1810.

He died 3 Dec 1812 at the age of 26, much like his father, who died at the age of 25. He is buried in Hartland Central Cem., Hartland, NY. There was no will and no mention of the cause of death at this early age. No apparent epidemics, War of 1812 was in progress and the cause could have been an Indian skirmish, although Oliver, being a preacher, it is unlikely he would have been in the war, at least, voluntarily. His estate was administered by sons and wife, Charity.

Charity remarried a Dexter P. Sprague. She died 16 June 1858 and son, Ezra, the only living child(bro, Amos died 1838) inherited Charity and Oliver's estate in 1858 following her death.

Children:

1. Amos b abt 1806 Hartland, Niagara Co., NY
2. Ezra7 b 19 Aug 1808 Hartland
3. Elizabeth b 1810-1812, died young, buried Hartland Central Cem, Hartland
