THE BROWN
FAMILY OF BRISLINGTON, SOMERSET
AND THEIR DESCENDANTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Grigg
Family of Hengrove House
William GRIGG,
gentleman, his wife Ann DELVER and their family lived at Hengrove
House in the 1700s and early 1800s. Sadly, Hengrove House
no longer exists but you can see an old photo of it by clicking
here.
This family also
had strong connections to Brislington and many family members
are buried in St Luke's Churchyard.
Searching
for Descendants
There are two
GRIGG/BROWN marriages in our family and I would love to trace
the descendants of both families.
1. Deborah
BROWN and Jonathan GRIGG
Descendants of
Deborah BROWN and Jonathan GRIGG, son of William
and Ann, who married on 17 June 1811 at the Parish Church
of St Luke, Brislington.
Jonathan Grigg
was a churchwarden at St Luke's in 1812. (LDS film of Bishop's
Transcripts). He died on 1 October 1819, almost exactly the
time his youngest son was born, and was aged just 32. Jonathan
was described as a Gentleman of Hengrove at the time.
Children of Deborah and Jonathan were:
-
Henry
Brown GRIGG, who died aged 16, on 16 May 1829, and
is buried in St Luke's Churchyard.
-
Jonathan
Delver GRIGG youngest son but listed here so that
the descendants of the one surviving child of Jonathan
and Deborah Grigg can be set out below. Jonathan Delver
was baptised on 30 October 1819 at the Parish Church of
St Luke, Brislington, but died on 11 November 1819, just
a few weeks after his father. He is described as being
five weeks old.
-
Francis
GRIGG (About 1818 - 30 July 1884) and
Ann ?? (About 1816 - 12 March 1895) who lived at
Hengrove House, Brislington in the mid 1800s. (Francis's
father died when he was only a year old and his mother
died when he was 14. Who looked after him after she died?)
It is possible that Francis, who was the son of Jonathan
GRIGG and Deborah BROWN, was a surgeon of Keynsham (as
was his cousin Walter BROWN).
The children of Francis and Ann Grigg are believed to
have included:
1. Ann Grigg (infant) (About March 1841 - 22 November
1846)
2. William Henry Grigg (? 1845 -?) In 1869 William
married his second cousin Elizabeth Rawle and they
had at least four children: Robert H Grigg, Mary
E Grigg, Catherine E Grigg and Mabel Grigg.
3. Edward Jonathan Delver Grigg (infant) (About
June 1846 - 28 December 1846)
4. Francis Robert Delver Grigg (Before March 1848
- 28 March 1875) who I think married Alice Hathaway
or Hathway (About 1853 - ? ) on 29 April 1874 atHoly
Trinity, Bristol, Gloucester, England. It seems that tragedy
struck this family once again as Francis died only a year
after the marriage. I supect that they had a son, Francis
Delver Grigg as Alice and her son appear at Danes
Lane, Keynsham in the 1881 census (I think) with
her second husband, Henry M Hardiman. Alice and Henry
then had a son, Edgar H Hardiman, aged just one year.
5. Mary Deborah Grigg, born 11 March 1830. In 1876
she married a Robert Ficklin.
6. Katherine Elizabeth Grigg (infant) (About April
1852 - 4 June 1853)
7. Arthur C? Grigg (About 1855 - ? )
8. Jessie Sarah Grigg (About 1861 - ? ). She married
a Mr Gibbons.
Monumental
inscriptions for the Parish Church of St Luke, Brislington,
Bristol indicate that members of the family of Francis and
Ann Grigg are buried in the same area as Deborah Brown's husband,
Jonathan Grigg, and parents-in-law, William and Ann.
2. Nathaniel
BROWN and Elizabeth GRIGG
The
other GRIGGs we are searching for are the descendants of
Deborah's brother Nathaniel BROWN and his wife Elizabeth
GRIGG, married on 3 December 1814 at St. Mary le Port,
Bristol, Gloucester, England. Nathaniel was at the time
described as being of St Mary, Redcliffe.
Our
family tree suggests that Nathaniel and Elizabeth had just two
children, Nathaniel Brown and Elizabeth (Bessie) Brown. I know
nothing further of Nathaniel but Elizabeth married William
Henry Rawle, who was an accountant, on 3 December 1843 at
St. Andrews, Clifton, Gloucester, England . William's father
was George Rawle and he probably had a brother named Frederick
Daniel Rawle, but that is all we know about his family.
Elizabeth
and William Henry Rawle had daughters Elizabeth and Mary Ann,
and possibly a son named William Henry.
I have
now discovered through my internet friend Melinda Good that
William Henry Grigg, son of Francis and Ann (above) married
his second cousin Elizabeth Rawle, daughter of William
Henry Rawle & Elizabeth (Bessie?) Brown, on 18 March 1869 in
Parish Church,St Andrew, Montpelier, Bristol, GLS, UK. Their
children were:
1.
Robert Henry Grigg (Before 7 July 1870 - ? )
2. POSSIBLY Francis William Grigg (infant) (Circa June 1871
- Sept 1871 )
3. Mary Elizabeth Grigg (Before 27 February 1875 - ? )
4. Catherine E? Grigg (Circa 1879 - ? )
5. Mabel Grigg (Circa 1880 - ? )
On
9 February 1871 an Alfred GRIGG, age 27, Batchelor, Occupation:
Clerk in Holy Orders, Residence: Upton, Torquay (Devon) Father:
William GRIGG, Gentleman, married Mary Ann RAWLE, age
25, Spinster, Residence: Cumberland Villas, Sydenham Road, Bristol.
We don't yet know how Alfred fits into the Grigg family. Nor
do we know whether Alfred and Mary Ann had any children.
Griggs
in Bristol
Handwritten
notes in papers of our grandfather in Australia (probably written
in the early part of the period 1920-1950) say that the Grigg
family was still in Bristol at that time.
On
a separate page I've posted, in all its raw glory, the beginnings
of a GRIGG family tree and my research notes for this family.
As can be seen, there are many missing details. It is also difficult
to sort out who is who in the Grigg family. If anyone has a
connection to any GRIGG in Brislington, Bristol or Keynsham
I would be delighted to hear from you. Click here for the Grigg
Family Tree and Research page.
