THE
BROWN FAMILY OF BRISLINGTON, SOMERSET
AND THEIR DESCENDANTS
Searching
for descendants in the UK...
Nathaniel and
Sarah BROWN and their descendants lived in Brislington
from the late 1500s. We believe that they were ancestors of
our Brown family but the first ancestor we can confidently
trace back to is William Brown, son of Nathaniel BROWN
and Katherine HORRELL, and grandson of Nathaniel and Sarah.
He was born in Brislington around 1705, the year Nathaniel
and Katherine were married. He was baptised on 14 April 1706.
William BROWN
had two wives and a very large family descended from them.
William's first wife was Sarah HORT, who he married
on 9 December 1725 at St John, Bedminster, Somerset, England.
William and Sarah had at least six children and their descendants'
surnames included BAKER, BIDDULPH, BROWN, C/GOLSTON, LINDON,
and THOMPSON. It is believed that Sarah Hort died in 1739
and William then married again. Interestingly the names Lindon
and Hort were given to the children and grandchildren of William
Brown and his second wife, so one might guess that the children
grew up together and were quite close.
William's second
wife was Deborah WORGAN, said
to have been born at Wollaston in 1711. She died in 1777 and
her footstone is in the graveyard
of St Luke's Parish Church. William and Deborah had five children
and their descendants and spouses in England included members
of the BATTEN, CATER, COLLINGS, EDGELL, GRIGG, HATHAWAY, LANE,
MORCOM, RAWLE and WASHBOURNE families.
Searching
for Descendants
The following
are just some of the families we are trying to trace.
-
Descendants
of Henry BROWN and Ann EDGELL who were married
on 7 June 1812 at St. John, Bedminster, Somerset, England
and lived at St Anne at one stage. I suspect that one of
their children came to Australia as there was a death notice
for Ann, wife of Henry BROWN, published in a Sydney, NSW
paper in 1850.
In the Sydney Morning Herald of 16 January 1850 the following
was announced: "Ann Brown wife of Henry Brown of St Anne's,
Brislington, Somerset, died 13.9.1849 at the residence of
her son-in-law (not named) at Swindon, Wiltshire." Who
was her son-in-law?
-
Descendants
of James BROWN and Sarah LANE who I think
lived in Bath in the early 1800s. Their daughter ? who died
when she was only 14 years old, is buried at St Luke's,
Brislington.

-
Descendants
of Nathaniel BROWN
and Elizabeth GRIGG, married on 3 December 1814
at St. Mary le Port, Bristol, Gloucester, England. Nathaniel
was at the time described as being of St Mary, Redcliffe.
-
Descendants
of Edward BROWN and Mary Ann WASHBOURNE, married
in Gloucester in 1822
-
-
Descendants
of Louisa Caroline BROWN and William MORCOM,
married Keynsham 1842
-
Descendants
of Elizabeth (Bessie) BROWN and William Henry
RAWLE, married in Bristol in 1843
-
Descendants
of Francis GRIGG (About 1818
- 30 July 1884) and
Ann ?? (About 1816 - 12 March 1895) who lived at
Hengrove House, Brislington in the mid 1800s. I believe
that Francis, who was the son of Jonathan GRIGG and Deborah
BROWN, was a surgeon of Keynsham (as was his cousin Walter
BROWN). Their children included:
1. Ann Grigg (infant) (About March 1841 - 22 November
1846)
2. Edward Jonathan Delver Grigg (infant) (About June
1846 - 28 December 1846)
3. Francis Robert Delver Grigg (Before March 1848
- 28 March 1875) who I think married Alice Hathaway (About
1853 - ? )
4. Katherine Elizabeth Grigg (infant) (About April
1852 - 4 June 1853) 5. Arthur C? Grigg (About 1855
- ? )
6. Jessie S? Grigg (About 1861 - ? )
