BRISLINGTON, PARRAMATTA,
NSW
From
1857 to 1949 three generations of the Brown family practiced
medicine from "Brislington", their historic, convict-built
home in the centre of Parramatta, NSW, Australia.
"Legend
has it that convict John HODGES won a fortune at a card game
in the Woolpack Inn and used the money to erect this building,
originally intended for an inn. A pattern of cards (his winning
hand) was built into the building's rear brick wall. Completed
in 1821" [C. Rivett].
According
to an 1822 map of the town of Parramatta, John HODGES is listed
as the proprietor/occupier of this (corner) block; and he also
had a second smaller allotment within the block bounded by Phillip,
Marsden, George and Church Streets.
