Sewn by Jane Borthwick circa 1840, living at Auburn Vale, and copied by Borthwick descendant Sue Bull in 1984. Sue is a great-great granddaughter of Jane Borthwick and Angus Fletcher.
This sampler is the only source of information about many Borthwick events - the wedding date for William Murray Borthwick and Helen Paterson, the deaths of some of their children in Scotland, and the death of Theressa Borthwick in Australia. None of these events have yet been found in official records.
The sampler also provides a problem. William Murray Borthwick's birthdate is stated to be 5 May 1782. In the Moffat Parish records however it is said that he was born on 13 May 1782. His headstone also says 13 May 1782. And yet it would be most unlikely that his daughter, sewing the sampler in 1840s when she was living with her parents, would make an error about her father's birthdate.
