The descendants of John Borthwick & Elizabeth Dinwiddie have taken me on an adventure all over Scotland. By the early 1800s, however, quite a few of their children and grandchildren, including my great-great-great-grandfather William Murray Borthwick, were living and working in Glasgow. This page is a collection of all the bits and pieces of information I've gathered about Borthwicks in Glasgow.

Please email me if you think you have a connection to any Borthwicks mentioned on this page. I may be able to put you in touch with someone who is researching your family.

Families of Special Interest to Australian Borthwicks

John Borthwick, portrait painter, 1846: John was the son of John Borthwick & Elizabeth Dinwoodie, and was baptised on 6 November 1791 in Drumelzier, Peebles, Scotland. In the early 1820s he was living in Edinburgh. By 1843 he was a portrait painter in Liverpool, England (see pages for John Borthwick and family). By 1846, however, he and his daughter were living in Glasgow, where he was still a portrait painter and she was a daguerreotypist (an early photographer). I have been unable to trace John Borthwick's family and would be very pleased to hear from anyone who knows of them.

Robert Forrester Borthwick, motor car inventor: R F Borthwick was the cousin of the Colin Borthwick family who came to New Zealand and Australia in the late 1800s. At that time he lived in Kessington Rd, Glasgow. It is said that Robert had the first MV licence, MV1, and had driven a car in front of Queen Victoria who was amazed! Cousins in Australia have a press clipping from a Glasgow newspaper of about 1933, which I have scanned and placed on another page of this site. If anyone knows of R F Borthwick or his family, especially family in Scotland, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

On a separate page, with the fantastic help of Meg Greenwood, I have now commenced listings of post-1855 Scottish births. The first lists are of Borthwick births for 1890, 1891, 1892 and 1893.

If any reader would like to add to this information please just let me know and I will post your information.

Post Office Directories

There are no Borthwicks in the Glasgow Post Office Directories for the following years: 1787, 1789, 1790, 1801, 1804, 1805, 1806, 1807, 1809, 1810, 1811.

The 1812 and 1813 Directories both list "Borthwick, Wm & Co, victuallers, 349, Gallowgate".

Between 1814 and 1828 the only Borthwick appearing in Glagow Directories is my ancestor William Murray Borthwick, who is recorded first at the Star Office from 1814 to 1816 and then in his own printing, publishing and bookselling business in 1817. (It seems that the Star was a London newspaper. Research underway ...!)

There are no Borthwicks in the Glasgow Directories for the years 1817 to 1828. (William Murray Borthwick established a printing business in Lanark in 1818.)

1881 census

In this census I've found just two Borthwicks in Glasgow proper, one in a boarding house and one boarding with Agnes Eyre and her daughter. There may be other Borthwicks whose names have been misspelt in the census. And there would surely be many other Borthwicks within the wider Glasgow area, but I haven't learnt how to search for them yet. The two in Glasgow were:

Poor Relief Applications

According to information posted on a number of Rootsweb mailing lists, prior to the Poor Law Act of 1845, the responsibility for poor relief lay jointly with the heritors [landowners] and Kirk Session in each parish & records of payments to the poor may be found in records of either.

After 1845, the Kirk Sessions & heritors were no longer legally responsible for the welfare of the poor.

The Mitchell Library in Glasgow has the Poor Relief for that city from 1845 on computer. These often contain a good deal of information. (Two Borthwick widows in my own family made applications and the papers record the names, ages, birthplaces, occupations, marital status and whereabouts of all of their children, as well as the applicant and deceased spouse, and the parents of the couple.)

The following Borthwicks made Poor Relief Applications in Scotland, including in Glasgow. The items for each person are surname, first name, husband's name (for females), age, place of application, year of application, year of birth. If you'd like to obtain further information about any of these applications you can contact the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, a Scottish Family History Group, or email researcher Des Garrity - desgarrity@blueyonder.co.uk.
