The information on these pages is both from my own research and from a number of very generous genealogists on the Rootsweb Mailing Lists 2000-2001.

My own particular research interest is in the ancestry and descendants of John Borthwick & Elizabeth Dinwiddie who were married in Edinburgh in 1781, but who seem to have lived in Peebles, Dumfriesshire and Lanarkshire. In the 1820s their sons, William Murray Borthwick and John Borthwick lived in Brown Street Edinburgh. (If any reader has a connection to Brown St, Edinburgh I have posted some wonderful recent photographs on the Brown St page.)

If you have any information about Borthwicks in Edinburgh that you'd like to post here for the assistance of other researchers I would be happy to do that. I am adding data as quickly as I can and the pages listed below contain, or will contain, data for Borthwicks in Scotland. Commissariot of Edinburgh 1514-1600

The information below is from 'The Commissariot of Edinburgh 1514-1600'. This is a register of testaments (wills), showing dates that the wills were lodged (not to be confused with date of death). Plenty of Borthwicks. Plenty of Borthwick spouses. Plenty of unusual-sounding occupations. Plenty of old-fashioned spellings. Plenty of place-names. Plenty of thanks to Richard.

to be added (lots of typing to do!)

Borthwicks Deaths and Burials in Edinburgh

to be added

Lost in Action, World War II

George Rennie's uncle was George Wilson Syme Borthwick, born in 1911, the son of John and Jean Martin Borthwick. He married Robina Rennie, in Edinburgh as far as George knows. The family was resident in Penicuik, near Edinburgh, until at least the late 1950s.

George Wilson Syme Borthwick was trained as a navigator, in Canada, under the British Empire Training Scheme and was subsequently posted to 97 Squadron, Royal Air Force, with the rank of Flying Officer, on 4th August 1943. At that time the squadron was part of No 8 Group Bomber Command, and an integral part of the Pathfinder Force. (The Pathfinder Force probably suffered a higher loss rate than the normal squadrons of Bomber Command) He was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in January 1944. Whilst serving with 97 Squadron he completed 19 sorties including 6 to Berlin.

It was on his 20th operation, on the night of the 28th/29th January 1944, again to Berlin, that he was posted Missing Believed Killed. His aircraft was lost without trace and as the routing for that particular operation was mainly over the North Sea it is presumed that the aircraft went down in the sea on the return trip, probably as a result of battle damage or enemy fighter action.

George Wilson Syme Borthwick is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial which overlooks the River Thames near Windsor and is inscribed with the names of aircrew lost in northern Europe who have no known grave.

Important Borthwicks in Edinburgh

In the 1970s (exact dates as yet unknown) the Lord Provost of Edinburgh was the Rt. Hon. Kenneth Borthwick. His official designation was the Right Honorable Kenneth Borthwick, Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, and he was the 266th with that honour. The Lord and Lady Provost, Lady Borthwick, visited Vancouver, BC in Canada. http://www.pacific-pages.com/hpeden/bandhist1.htm If any reader knows more about the Right Honourable Kenneth Borthwick I would be very pleased to hear.

Lost Borthwicks in Edinburgh

Sanderson/Borthwick connection?: One of my email correspondents advises that a Helen BORTHWICK turns up from time to time in Sanderson research. She was witness at a SANDERSON wedding in 1871, and a child of a different marriage was named Helen Borthwick SANDERSON. The head of the family, Peter SANDERSON, at one time lived near the Pleasance, and was associated with the whisky trade. Does anyone know about these Sanderson / Borthwick connections? Please email me if you can help.
