THE BORTHWICK / MCNAB FAMILY - descendants of Thomas Borthwick & Margaret McNab, m. Edinburgh, Scotland, 1820

On this page, with the assistance of many living descendants, is posted a family tree for Thomas Borthwick, and his wife Margaret McNab (McNabb). They were married on 23 October 1820 in Edinburgh, Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland. Thomas was a Joiner of South Leith. Their first three children were baptised in South Leith but then in 1834 John McNab Borthwick was born in Glassary, Argyll, Scotland. The next child, David, was baptised in Port Glasgow, Renfrew in 1835 and the last child I have found so far was Rebecca, also baptised in Port Glasgow, four years later in 1839.

Colin Borthwick, the oldest son of Thomas Borthwick and Margaret McNab, married Susan McLachlan in Hope St Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland on 21 August 1851. They had a number of children in Scotland but then sometime before 1867 travelled to New Zealand, where their youngest son, Colin Andrew Borthwick was born. Their oldest son, Charles McLachlan Colin Borthwick married in New Zealand and had a number of children but then he and his family came to Australia where the majority of the family settled.

Perhaps there is a connection between this family and my own. Certainly descendants were told that all the Borthwicks who came to Australia in the 1800s were related to each other.

One story in the family is that a cousin Colin Borthwick in Scotland owned a ship building business in Glasgow. Another is that the McNab family was an important and wealthy family in Scotland. Another is that the family always intended coming to Australia but got off the ship in New Zealand, possibly for the birth of a child, and lived there for 10 years or so before finally coming to Australia. And yet another story is that Colin Borthwick came to Australia ahead of his wife and family.

Some of the daughters of Thomas Borthwick and Margaret McNab apparently stayed in Scotland, or went back there. Also in Scotland was their cousin Robert Forrester Borthwick, who invented one of the first motor cars.
