Biggar Kirk, the parish church dedicated to St Mary, dates back to 1545, although it may incorporate older work, and is the last pre-reformation church in Scotland. The floor plan is in the shape of a Christian Cross, it has a crenellated tower, its stone walls have been restored and its stained glass windows are outstanding. The tower has gunloops for muskets. The Church was built by the Flemings of Boghall Castle. Mary Fleming of Boghall was one of Mary Queen of Scots Four Marys. It was restored in 1870-1 and again in 1934-5 and is still used as the parish church.
