Scilla, Italy
Domenico LaBate was born in the small town of Scilla in the southern most province of the Italian mainland, Reggio Calabria. The name of the town originally comes from Greek mythology, specifically "The Odyssey" by Homer. The sea monsters, Scylla and Charybdis, were said to inhabit the Straits of Messina and destroy ships as they attempted to navigate through the Straits. Scylla, who was once a beautiful woman but had been turned into a six headed monster by the jealous Cerce, inhabited the mainland side of the Straits and waited to devour any mariner who passed close by.

Scilla is a very ancient village, which was inhabited before the birth of Christ. Today the town still stands as it did for millennia guarding the entrance to the Straits of Messina. In the center of the town is the big rock, on top of which lies the Ruffo Castle. This rock divides the town into sections: Marina Grande and Chianalea lie on the shore, with the third section, San Giorgio, sitting at the top of the rock, behind the Castle.
