"...Younger Johnson, II was 16 years old when is father, Billy, and his oldest brother, Alexander, left to fight in the war. He was left at home to look after his mother and little brothers and sisters. One day, some Confederate soldiers were in the vicinity raiding farms. They were taking mostly food. A soldier, who was the flagbearer for his company, came up to Jaley's house and started taking chickens. Jaley went running out of the house and told him to leave her chickens alone. The soldier ignored her and continued on, but Jaley persisted. He, then, turned around and slapped Jaley.Younger saw what had happened and grabbed his gun and went running after the soldier. He caught up to the man, took aim with is gun and shot him. The soldier fell dead. When Jaley saw this, she realized that had to get her sone out of the area fast. So, she had Younger hitch up the wagon, and they left immediately for Fort Smith. By this time, Fort Smith had fallen to the North. Jaley and Younger made the trip without encountering any Confederate troops, and Younger was enlisted in the Union Army with his Mother's permission."
