There are a couple of eligible Ellen Forrests in the LDS database, both born in Preston. More details ... Ellen Forrest #1 or Ellen Forrest #2. The marriage certificate between Thomas Henry Atherton and Ellen Forrest states Ellen's father as William, the 1861 census has Ellen Forrest #2's father as John Forrest so this seems to favour candidate #2.

One of Ellen Forrest's sisters moved to the U.S.

Word of mouth has Ellen Forrest being Ellen Forest (i.e. one 'r') - Free BMD has 2 'r's. However this may refer to another Forest in this tree.

LDS has a Susannah Hayes b 1823 in Lancaster, spouse John Atherton and father Constantine Hayes. Seems a good fit but 1881 census states her birthplace as Preston.

Thomas and Jane Atherton had, at least, 8 children.

Thomas Henry Atherton was mayor of Preston. 1931.
