Bentham

Origin and Meaning of the name Bentham

BENTHAM is an Old English place description. The suffix ham refers to a homestead or house while bent, from what I have been able to discover, appears to be a kind of grass. So the name would mean a house or homestead surrounded by grasslands.

Introduction

My maternal grandmother is Gladys Bentham, daughter of Henry & Hannah Bentham of Parbold, Lancashire. There have been Benthams living in Pabold for many generations and until the present day and there are Benthams buried in both Parbold Catholic and Church of England graveyards.

Aims of my Research

The basic aim of my research is to go as far back as possible with the Bentham's of Parbold. This was complicated by discrepancies in the ages given for my gg grandfather William Bentham on the different census returns, nevertheless I have found that although the ages vary from census to census, the names stay constant. I have followed the family back through 1891, 1881, 1871, 1861, 1851 and the earliest census of 1841 and pieced together an extended family tree.
My main aim now would be to fill in any gaps in the information I have, to find out where the Benthams born in Parbold went to when they left and to see if it is possible to trace the family back any further.

My Research Results

The Benthams of Parbold Village, Lancashire

1752

The first reference I have come across which mentions Benthams in Parbold is a Survey of "Yearly Value of Messuages, tenements & Heridatements in Parbold" of 21st Januery 1752. Of 31 names mentioned on the list, one is John Bentham.

1782

The Parbold Land Tax Return of 1782 makes a reference to Bentham's. Whether these two early Bentham references in Parbold are related to my own family or not I do not know as yet. The earliest reference I have to my line of Benthams comes from the 1841 census wich relates to William Bentham, who appears to have been born in Charnock and not in Parbold.

1841

William BENTHAM 65 Cotton Weaver
Joseph BENTHAM 33 Cotton Weaver
Henry BENTHAM 25 Agricultural Labourer
Peter BENTHAM 20 Agricultural Labourer
Mary BENTHAM 18

William BENTHAM 35
Margery BENTHAM 30
William BENTHAM 5
Mary BENTHAM 1

The 1841 census is the first census that was taken in Great Britain and therefore the furthest I have been able to go back with my Bentham family line so far. In 1841 there are 2 Bentham groups living next to each other in Parbold.

I believe we have a 65 year old father called William who was a cotton weaver and 4 sons and one daughter: William who is married to Margery and has a son called William and a daughter called Mary, then three unmarried sons and a daughter living with their father, Joseph, Henry, Peter and Mary. William the elder would be my gggg grandfather and his son Henry my ggg grandfather.

To find out more we have to more on to the 1851 census.

1851

William BENTHAM widower 75 late weaver b.Charnock
Henry BENTHAM 38 labourer stone quarry son b Parbold
Thomas BENTHAM gson 14 scholar b Parbold
David BENTHAM 8 scholar b Parbold

Mary BENTHAM d 4 scholar b. Parbold
John BENTHAM s 7 scholar b. Parbold

Peter BENTHAM h 33 ag. lab. b Parbold
Ellen BENTHAM w 35 b Tarleton
Margaret BENTHAM d 7 scholar b Parbold
Elizabeth BENTHAM d 6 scholar b. Parbold
Jane BENTHAM d 1 scholar b. Parbold

Now there are 3 Bentham groups in Parbold. William the father is still alive. This census gives us more information as it tells us his birthplace is Charnock. His son Joseph has left Parbold, while his son Henry (my ggg grandfather) is living with him and has: Thomas, David, William (my gg grandfather) and Margaret. No wife is given for him so in the space of 10 years since the last census he must have married had four children and his wife died.
Son William and his wife Margery now have William, Edward, Mary and John. The one year old Mary of 1841 must have died.
Son Peter has married Ellen and they have Margaret, Elizabeth and Jane.

1861

In 1861, from the information I have, it appears that William father has died. Sons William and Peter and their families have left Parbold and we find Henry married to Alice with Thomas and Mary Ann at home. Henrys son William (my gg grandfather) is living in and working at Tan House Farm. David does not appear to be in Parbold.

1871

William BENTHAM son in law 24 labourer in brick yard b Parbold

By 1871 David is at home with his father while Thomas is not, William has married Ruth Hart (my gg grandmother) and is living with his mother in law, Nancy Hart (ne Fisher).

By the 1881 census it appears that Henry father has died. His 3 sons, Thomas, David and William have established families in the Parbold area. It is interesting to note that all three have named their first born son after their father, Henry. My great grandfather is Henry, son of William, therefore my line is:
William Henry William Henry.

Henry & Hannah Bentham

The 1891 census gives us more children for the three Bentham families in Parbold and takes us well into living memory. William & Ruth's son, Henry Bentham (b. 9th May 1876) married Hannah Taylor (b. 10th Sept 1881) in Parbold on 17th August 1907. They lived in the cottage in Alder Lane, Parbold which today is the "Wayfarer's Restaurant". Henry worked as a Steam Wagon driver, delivering animal fodder for Ainscough's Mill, Parbold. They had the following children:

Henry & Gladys Anderton

My great aunt Lilly remembers that when she was a child, her father Henry used to go to visit his cousin Elizabeth Bentham, (daughter of Thomas & Mary) in Stony Lane on Sundays.

My mum remembers her great aunts and uncles, Uncle Charlie, Auntie Ellen Ann and Auntie Ada, who lived just two doors away in Station Road Parbold.

Searching for info on Christopher Bentham born c1816.
His father`s name was Thomas.
I have him living at Barnacre with Bonds near Garstang in 1853, and later at Skerton, Lancaster, but I do not yet know where he was born, although I am aware of a Christopher Bentham born in Ingleton, Yorkshire in 1816.
