Stanley Gayle Anderton of Mathews County, VA, USA

Stanley served in Company C. 314th Machine Gun Battalion as Corporal. He was stationed at Camp Fort Lee, Virginia, left for France on May 24, 1918 on the river steamer, New York, the first soldiers to sail down the James River since the Civil War!! On May 26, 1918, he left Newport News, VA on the transport Mercury (formerly the German steamer, Barparosa) and arrived in France on June 8, 1918. Stanley participated in the Arton, St. Meheil and Meuse/Argonne offensives. He left France on the battleship, New Jersey, on May 21, 1919 and was discharged on June 19, 1919. I have a diary of his time in France.
