COMMENT
If sighting this reference again, check Fox-Davies' sources and the significance of "(H. Coll.)" at the start of certain entries. Does this mean that the arms are registered with the College of Heralds?

COMMENT
The arms of Wilfrid Francis Anderton of Haighton Hall. GOA.7 shows that Wilfred Frances Anderton (Note the spelling) had a grant of arms in 1835-1836, Since I have it from another source that his fathers' name was James Francis Anderton, I must assume that either the grant books contained grants after the start date of the next one or it was granted to his father. .

COMMENT
This is problematic since it appears to show that two individuals have the same coat of arms, without mention of marks of Cadency, when they do not even appear to be directly related. Certainly they are both Yorkshire Andertons, all I can assume is that they are descended from a common ancestor and that - although Fox-Davies does not specify it - one of them would be differenced to show that theirs is the cadet branch.
TRANSCRIPTION 3
"ANDERTON, (H. Coll.) Sable, on a chevron invected argent, between four shackbolts, three in chief and one in base of the last, a cinquefoil of the first.
Mantling - Sable and argent
Crest - On a wreath of the colours, a stork argent, holding in the beak three cinquefoils slipped or, and resting the dexter leg on a shackbolt sable"
[Pedigree follows]
"Son of late James Anderton, of Burgh Hall, Lancs.:-
James Parkinson Anderton, Gentleman, M.R.C.S., b. [space] formerly of Brondyffryn, Denbighshire."
FOX.39
COMMENT
From this we discover that James Parkinson Anderton, MRCS of Denbighshire is the son of James Anderton of Burgh Hall.
TRANSCRIPTION 4

COMMENT
The Anderton quarterings on this achievement are identical those of Anderton of Burgh Hall.
As regards "Marks of Distinction" Fox-Davies, in "Heraldry explained", p.86, says "[They] are used in England, when under a will or settlement requiring the assumption of name and arms, a royal licence is issued to persons who can show no descent in the male or female line from the family whose arms are then exemplified. Some mark is then added to the arms and to the crest to advertise this fact. There are no rules as to what these marks should be, and they of course depend upon the patent of exemplification. They are, however, most frequently a canton and a cross crosslet respectively ..."
In this case, the Anderton arms are marked " (for distinction) [with] a canton ermine" and on the crest the stork is "charged (for distinction) on the breast with an annulet gules". The annulet is a ring which is normally used to mark the cadency of a fifth son. This would suggest that the father-in-law of Francis might have stipulated that he take the Anderton arms and that Francis might have added Anderton to his name at the same time.
