According to the on-line Telephone Directory in March 2001, there are 1,040 telephone subscribers with the surname Anderton in the United State of America. The highest concentration is in Texas (92), followed by Utah (91), Alabama (88), Tennessee (85) then California (67).

The American Anderton Legend

There seems to be a family legend or tradition among many American Andertons who have contacted me which says that the Andertons came to America to escape the religious persecution they were suffering in England. It seems they hoped to set up a Catholic Colony in the New World, possibly in Maryland.

This would tie in directly with the Anderton Family branches of Lancashire, England, who were staunch catholics and suffered persecution for their beliefs. (See The Andertons & Religion).
