  • Anderton or Anderston?

8 Andertons and 13 Anderstons in Scotland in 1881. The name Anderston only appears 4 more times on the census (in Cheshire and Wales), it seems unusual that there are so few people with this name. Anyone named Anderton will know that Anderston is a common spelling mistake used for the name, but are the Scottish Anderstons really Andertons? Or is Anderston a typically Scottish name and perhaps the Andertons in Scotland are really Anderstons?

I know there is a place in Glasgow called Anderston, began in 1720 as a weaver's village. I know that the name came from the Anderson family of Stobcross who were the main landowning family in the area. The village became an industrial centre with the growth of Glasgow's cotton industry and perhaps this could give rise to a confusion of the name with a similar surname when taking the census.

If anyone has any information on the Anderston name I would be pleased to hear from them.

Although there are 13 Anderstons on the census either living or born in Scotland in 1881, I have eliminated several of these families as they have AnderSON and AnderSTON in the same family group, leading me to beleive that the extra T is a mistake. This leaves us with:

  • , 1881
  • , 1881
