There are a total of 3,566 persons named Anderton on the census, yet only 9 Andertons living in Wales, 8 in Scotland and 8 on the Isle of Man.
The geographical distribution of Andertons in 1881 within England itself is also very interesting. In the London area there are 116 Andertons, being the capital, it is logical to find a large number there. In Cheshire 107, Warwickshire 283, and Yorkshire 408 but the highest concentration of people bearing the Anderton name is in Lancashire, 2,189. That means that 61% or nearly two thirds of all Andertons in England in 1881 are still living in the county where the name originated.
No other county runs into thousands and only the areas mentioned above run into the hundreds. All other areas of great Britain have a single or double figure only, the highest of these being Surrey with 63, Staffordshire with 56, Worcestershire with 54, Northampton with 41, Lincolnshire with 39 and Hampshire with 33. Many counties of England in 1881 have no Andertons or just one person or one or two family groups.
