- IsaLei-Rua
Information
- Complete
information and photos of the yacht that Larry sailed the Pacific
during the years 1990 - 1996.
IsaLei-Rua, shown below on her mooring in
Matauwhi Bay in NZ. In May 2000, she was sold to Bob & Jacquie
Donovan, an Aussie couple who sailed her home to Perth, Australia,
arriving November 2000. They sailed her around the top of Australia via
Cairns and Darwin. The voyage took about 4 months. IsaLei-Rua is now an
Australian registered vessel with the home port of Fremantle, Western
Australia. In 2005, the Donovans sailed her to Tasmania and
in
2006 they sailed up the east coast of Australia stopping along the way.
In September 2006, they sailed to the Louisiades of
Papua New Guinea, returning to Australia in November 2006.
When
they were sailing south to Brisbane, Jan & I went aboard
IsaLei-Rua
in Bundaberg and found her to be still in excellent condition and all
systems running smoothly.
They
are planning to put IsaLei-Rua on the market due to health problems
that make
it impossible to continue offshore sailing. An Email from the Donovans
dated 17 January, 2007 states, "Isalei-Rua now has new owners being
Arie & Lenie Smit who took ownership on Friday, 5 January, 2007".

I was born in British Columbia,
Canada, where I lived for several years until moving to Alberta. In Alberta, I worked, married, and raised 2 sons.
I was transferred to
Vancouver in the early 80's, bought a 27ft yacht, and learned to sail. In 1986,
we sold that boat and bought IsaLei-Rua, a 37ft yacht specifically
designed and built for offshore sailing. In June 1990, after working for the same
company for 30
years, a long anticipated retirement came and we went offshore sailing.
We
spent the next 6
years exploring the Pacific from Mexico to Australia. Eventually, we
settled in northern New Zealand. IsaLei-Rua was sold at
Easter
2000 and we moved to Australia where the weather was
kinder.
(See 'The sailing adventures of IsaLei-Rua').
I now live in beautiful Queensland, Australia, with
my partner Janet and have become an Australian citizen.
In the Winter 2007 issue of the IBM retiree magazine 'In
Touch', they did an article about me and my retirement.

In 2012, I wrote a pictorial story about the stuffed friends I had acquired since 1991. This is their story.
