DNA Group

The Anderson DNA Project Group webpage is a list of the groups in the project. Each Group is linked to a webpage that shows the member's ID number and information about each member's lineage report, if the information has been contributed.

Presently, there are seventeen groups, the mtDNA group and an unassigned group in the project and we currently have 331 members. As our project grows matches will be made with members currently in a group situation and with members in the unassigned group.

The universal male test is called Y-DNA and the Y-chromosome passes down from father to son. Females do not receive it. The fact that the Y-chromosome goes down the paternal line makes it valuable for genealogy studies, since it typically follows a surname line.

The universal female test is called mtDNA. Both males and females can test their mtDNA to determine the origin of their maternal line. Note that the mtDNA strictly checks the maternal line, with no influence from any males along that line. Men and women both receive their mtDNA from their mother.

More women are requesting to be a part of the Anderson DNA Project study. We believe that a woman's connection to their Anderson ancestors is vitally important in making connections with the male side of the family. You may have a "brick-wall" situation with your male Anderson ancestor and information from the female Anderson side of the family may help you breakdown that "brick-wall"! For this reason, we have added the mtDNA group to the Results webpage. You can click here to find the mtDNA results information. We have also provided a webpage for the females that have joined the Anderson DNA Project. Be sure to check out the mtDNA Group page!

Remember, we only provide mtDNA results and Lineage Information for the females who have chosen to join our project because they have an Anderson grandparent somewhere in their family line. By providing the female's Anderson lineage on this web site we hope to help everyone make a connection one way or another.

How is a member assigned to a group? For the purpose of the Anderson DNA Project, members are assigned to a group dependent upon who they match with on the 12 Marker Y-DNA test.

Below are the groups in the Anderson DNA Project. Each group has a complete list of members who match with some or all of the people in the group. Lineage Reports are available for many of our members.
