John SHAPE 24 M Farm PA ; Eliza 22 F PA ; Wm. 2 M PA ; Margaret GRANT 64 F PA

PERSONAL OBSERVATION: this head-of-household may have been an older brother to John Morgan Shappe. The name, age and nativity of the wife corresponds in many ways to that of the Eliza[beth] indicated in the census data of 1880 and the information in the death register noted in the NOTES for Eliza nee Grant Shape.

Margaret GRANT 77 F Housekeeper PA ; John SHAPE 33 M Farmer PA ; Eliza 32 F Housekeeper PA ; Margaret M. 9 F PA ; Hannah J. 6 F PA ; Lydia A. 2 F PA ; Hiram 6/12 M PA

PERSONAL OBSERVATION: though there is a slight discrepancy between the declared age of John SHAPE between 1850 and 1860 [nine years aged] and the declared age of Margaret GRANT in the same time period [thirteen years aged], there are too many similarities between the records of 1850 and 1860 for the data NOT to refer to the same family. Apparently a son, William, had either died before 1860 or was living elsewhere, possibly as a farm hand.

SHAPE, Eliza 41 F White Keeping house PA ; Hannah 16 F White PA ; Lydia 13 F White PA ; Elizabeth 8 F White PA

PERSONAL OBSERVATION: a comparison of the census data for this family between 1850 - 1870 helps one conclude that (1) John SHAPE had died between 1860 and 1870; (2) that a son, William, died in the 1850's; (3) that Margaret GRANT, Liza's mother, had died between 1860 and 1870; (4) that a daughter, Margaret H., and a son, Hiram, either died or moved elsewhere between 1860 and 1870; and that another daughter, Hannah J., either died or moved elsewhere between 1870 and 1880.

PERSONAL OBSERVATION: this head-of-household in the last family MAY HAVE BEEN married to an older brother to John Morgan Shappe. The name, age and nativity of the individual corresponds in many ways to that of the Eliza[beth] indicated in the census data of 1850 and 1860, and the information in the death register noted below.

NOTE: a census record of Cumberland Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, for the name Milton Shape is less convincing. The age of the Milton Shape is placed at 22, with a birth of about 1828. The Milton Shappe of the above census record of 1880 is more likely the son of Jacob Shape and brother to John Morgan Shappe.

PERSONAL OBSERVATION: the death certificate of Arratta Belle Shappe Applebee lists her father as John Shappe and her mother as Margaret Rush Shappe, both parents indicated as born in Pennsylvania. Arratta's birth is indicated as November 22, 1874 in Greene County, Pennsylvania. There is a John M. Shape buried in Grand Ridge Cemetery, not far from the burial plot of Herman and Arratta Belle Shappe Applebee. These facts and the information shown above from the 1880 census of Greene County, Pennsylvania, strongly indicate that the MORGAN SHAPE in the census record is the same as the John M. Shape buried in Grand Ridge Cemetery. Both had a wife named Margaret and both had a daughter. The death certificate does list that daughter as ARRATTA BELLE SHAPPE whereas the census record shows that daughter as ARISTA B. The close similarity of the given name and the date of birth of the daughter is added proof. The only discrepency is the nativity of this daughter: the census shows the birth state as Ohio, and the death certificate shows the birth state as Pennsylvania. HOWEVER, GREENE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, IS LOCATED ON THE SOUTH-WESTERN BOUNDARY OF THAT STATE, PLACING IT ADJACENT TO THE STATE OF OHIO.

On another issue, this census record indicates [15-Jan-2002] that the families of the widow Eliza SHAPE and that of Samuel SHAPE live adjacent that of John Morgan SHAPE. The recorded nativity information of the parents of individuals listed in these other families, the surname being the same, and the locality where they lived suggest that Samuel and John Morgan were brothers, and that Eliza was once married to an older brother of Samuel and John Morgan. A check of the 1850 Census of Pennsylvania DOES support this interpretation [done, 16-Jan-2002].

John M. Shape of Grand Ridge Dead - Sustained Stroke of Paralysis Wednesday, Death Resulting Yesterday

John M. Shape, a highly respected resident of Grand Ridge, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. Rutan, in that city yesterday afternoon at 2:45 o'clock. Death was attributed to a stroke of paralysis, which he experienced on Wednesday evening, and from which he never rallied.

Mr. Shape was a native of Pennsylvania and was born in Greene county, on the fourth day of March, 1838, and resided in that country for a number of years. He was united in marriage to Miss Margaret A. Rush, at Clarksville, Pa., April 17, 1867, and to this union three children were born, who survive as follows: William Shape of Marseilles, Mrs. M. Rutan of Grand Ridge, and Mrs. Belle Applebee of Dayton township. Mrs. Shape died October 25, 1883.

The deceased enlisted in the cause of the union in the civil war and saw many hardships of those stirring days. For the past thirty years the deceased has been a resident of Grand Ridge and was one of the city's most highly respected residents.

The funeral services will be held at the residence at 1 o'clock and at the Methodist church at 1:30 o'clock. The interment will be made in the Grand Ridge cemetery.

Grand Ridge Pioneer Laid to Rest Sunday - Succumbed to Third Stroke of Paralysis Wednesday, Expired Friday Afternoon - Fought With Honor During Civil War, John Shape Had Always Been a Highly Respected Citizen - Basketball Game Tonight

Grand Ridge, Ill. - The funeral of the late John M. Shape took place on Sunday afternoon from the home of his daughter, Mrs. M. Rutan at one o'clock, with services at the Methodist church, Tev. Thorpe. officiating. Mr. Shape was among the older residents of this community, and while he had not been in the best of health he was able to be about the home until Wednesday evening when he suffered a third stroke of paralysis, from which he passed away Friday afternoon at 2:45 o'clock.

He was born in Pennsylvania, on March 4th, 1838. On April 17th, 1867, he was married to Miss Margaret Rush, Mrs. Shape having died October 25, [sic]1888. Three children and one brother are left to mourn his departure. Mr. Shape was one of the few civil war veterans left, he having served his country faithfully during the civil war. At its close, being honorably discharged, he lived a quite, retiring life, holding the respect of those who knew him. The family is tendered the sympathy of their many friends and neighbors in this, their hour of sorrow.

THE FOLLOWING CENSUS DATA IS SHOWN AS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW SUCH INFORMATION CAN MISLEAD.

INITIAL PERSONAL OBSERVATION: at this time there lives nearby the family of Uriah and Elsa [sic]Enghman who have living with their family a farm hand by the name of Peter RUSH (20 M W PA), who was probably the son of John and Elnev RUSH, and a brother to Margeret.

A further distance away at this time lives the family of a possible brother, Peter, to John RUSH:

And next to Peter and Mary RUSH, at this time, live a possible son of theirs, Richard RUSH [18 M W Farm hand PA], who is a farm hand for the family of Reed Throckmorton.

ADDITIONAL PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS: a study of the 1880 Census of Franklin, Greene County, Pennsylvania, reveals that the family of John and Ellen Rush had a daughter, Margaret A., still living with them and the rest of their children. This child, Margaret, was single at the age of 30 in 1880. She could not be the parent of Arrata Belle Shappe who is recorded as born in 1874.

THE NEXT SECTION OF TRANSCRIPTIONS MAY BE A MORE RELIABLE AVENUE TO INVESTIGATE: (A study of the following census data provides a possibility for tracing the ancestry of Margaret Rush. At this time, 21-Jan-2002, it is unclear if this is the Margaret Rush who married John Shappe. or who Rachel Rush was or her connection to the recorded Margaret.)

Daniel SIMMONS 30 M Farmer PA ; Priscilla [sic]27/29 F Housekeeper PA ; Christopher 2 M PA ; Abigail 2/12 F PA ; Margaret Rush 12 F PA

OBSERVATION ABOUT THIS RECORD: IF THIS IS THE MARGARET RUSH THAT MARRIED JOHN SHAPE, the age of this Margaret places her birth in 1848, which corresponds to the known age of Margaret. However that other information places the nativity of Margaret in OHIO while this 1860 record places that nativity in Pennsylvania.

Examination of the 1850 and 1870 census data for the Rush family may prove helpful [see below].

On another note, adjacent to this family in 1860 lives:

Christopher COX 68 M Farmer PA ; Mary 24 F Housekeeper PA ; Ann 17 F [sic}Do PA ; Christopher 12 M PA ; Rachel RUSH 40 F Housekeeper PA ; James COX 19 M Farmer PA

AND IN MORGAN TWP. IN 1860 [Ancestry.com Image Library - Image 391]:

Jacob RUSH 37 M Farmer PA ; Elizabeth 36 F Housekeeper PA ; Sarah A. 13 F PA ; Isabell 11 F PA ; [sic]Permelia A. 10 F PA ; Benjamin D. 6 M PA

For this last to reference Margaret A. SHAPPE, then one must accept that the differences in BIRTH YEAR and GIVEN NAME are negligible [13 years of age instead of 12 in 1860; "Sarah A." in place of Margaret A.]. At this time there also lived near this family of Jacob RUSH that of Mathias (72) and Sarah A.(67) RUSH who were of an age to have been the parents of Jacob RUSH. Coincidentally, the family of a Jacob and Sarah RUSH live in Jefferson Township in 1860.
