PERSONAL OBSERVATION:
at this time [04/25/2001] the names of only four children of this
couple are known; the number of years for this marriage is apparently
mis-stated in the census record, as the couple were married in 1864,
not 1880.
One of their five
children was Mary Marie O'Neil who (but as wife to Edward Keating),
according to the same census records, was born in October of 1866.
The above shows that Edward and Kate were married 20 years by 1900.
If so, their marriage took place about 1880. Marriage records reveal
that Mary Marie was 24 years of age when she married in 1890. By this
latter record, she would have been born in 1866. This latter record
reveals the names of her parents as Edward O' Neil and Catherine Boyle.
There is a discrepency for the date of marriage for the parents of
Mary Marie, unless her parents married some 14 years AFTER the birth
of Mary Marie (which seems highly unlikely). Two other possibilities
are that the "number of years married" that is indicated
in the census record is in error or, perhaps, Catherine (Kate) Boyle
O'Neil was the second wife of Edward O' Neil.
There is the remaining
confusion regarding dates of birth for Mary Marie O'Neil [October
1866] and the birth of James O'Neil [August 1866]. The possibility
exists that Mary Marie and James were not siblings, though there is
enough evidence [names of parents are the same] from the marriage
records that shows that they were siblings.
