JAMES ANDREW KEATING:
PERSONAL NOTE: comparing
the two ship's lists, the first has the "correct" age
indicated for James Andrew Keating, but also lists an unknown
Jane Keating as a one year old infant; the second shows James
Andrew Keating traveling alone, but the age is listed as 27, indicating
a birth of about 1851 rather than 1847. These are the only two
records of a James Keating who immigrated before the rest of his
family did in March 1881 and who could have still fathered a daughter,
Mary, who was born in late 1880 and later immigrated with her
mother and siblings in March 1881.

of this couple were no longer living at home as they had married
before 1900; one son born in 1886 [Richard] may have died while
very young, as his name is not included in this census data;
it is possible that the servant named is a relative by marriage,
as Katherine Langan (who was born in England in 1872) was married
to Richard Keating, brother to James Andrew Keating.

Her condition became serious several weeks ago.
For the past several months she has been cared for

were married in Scotland, their native land, and shortly after
came to America. They built the family home more than sixth
years ago after being occupants of a house in what was known

WELL KNOWN MAN CLAIMED BY DEATH
Death Occurs At Family Residence At Early Hour This Morning
John Munn, sixty-five years of age and a well known
resident of this city died this morning at 3 o'clock at the
family residence, 812 South Vermillion street, after an illness
lasting but two weeks.
The deceased is survived by his wife Catherine, five
sons, James Munn of Chicago, Walter Munn, of Chanute, Kan.,
Richard Munn, U.S. Navy, William and Bernard Munn of this city;
two daughters, Mrs. Samuel Dash of Pontiac, and Katherine, who
resides at home.
Mr. Munn was born in Lanshire, Scotland, April 17,
1846 and was united in marriage to Catherine Keating of Rutherylin,
Scotland in the fall of 1873. He came to this country in 1881
coming direct to Streator and has resided here ever since.
The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Munn,
both of whom still live in Scotland. Just this morning a letter
was received from Scotland announcing the death of his mother
on the 24th of January. She lived to be eigthy-two years of
age.
The funeral will be held from the Church of the Immaculate
Conception at 9 o'clock Friday morning, the Rev. Father O'Kelly
officiating. Interment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery.
PERSONAL OBSERVATION: there is
a possibility that John Munn had a brother by the name of Walter
Munn who would have been born in 1860. A certificate of birth
for James Munn, born March 1, 1886, lists Walter Munn and Jane
Brown as parents. Need to check for a possible marrige license
for these parents [MUNN, WALTER BROWN, JANE LA SALLE 04/22/1882
1 /209 2719].
There is a possibility that John Munn
had another brother by the name of William Munn who would have
been born in 1862. A certificate of birth for Marion Munn, born
May 8 , 1887, lists William Munn and Ann Williams as parents.
See Return of a Record of Marriage information in the marriage
notes for these parents.

PERSONAL NOTE [JFK 2005] REGARDING CHILDREN
OF THIS MARRIAGE:
As this couple are noted in both the 1900
and 1910 U.S. Census records as having 7 of 10 children alive,
there is a discrepency with the list of siblings compiled through
various other sources. Those sources are used to cite the names
and birthdates of 13 children for this couple. However, since
recording errors may have been made on a number of those records,
it necessary to rectify these discrepencies.
- Child #1 : James Munn (1873-1936)
recorded by Bob Munn, 09/13/2004, bobmunn@att.net - "Report
297, JM Register"
- Child #2 : John Keating Munn
(1875-1894) recorded on Image of 1875 Birth Register of the
Parsih of Cambuslang in the County of Lanark - Page 66, #196
which was courtesy of Nick Rice - August 10, 2004 - niric2003@yahoo.co.uk
(this record confirms a birth connection with John Munn and
his wife, Catherine Keating)
- Child #3 : Alice Cunningham
Munn (b. 1877) recorded on Image of 1877 Birth Register of the
Parsih of Lesmahagow in the County of Lanark - Page 134, #402
which was courtesy of Nick Rice - August 10, 2004 - niric2003@yahoo.co.uk
(this record confirms a birth connection with John Munn and
his wife, Catherine Keating)
- Child #4 : Walter Ramsay
Munn (b. 1879) whose name and nativity are recorded in both
the 1900 and 1920 U.S. Census records
- Child #5 : Marion Munn recorded
(b. 1881) recorded in a 1900 U.S. Census record for the Streator,
Illinois, area BUT NOT listed with her parents
- Child #6 : William Paul Munn
(1882-1960) strongest evidence recorded in Delayed Certificate
of Birth by La Salle County, Illinois, County Clerk, October
30, 1942 - #65162
- Child #7 : Unknown male Munn
(b. Feb. 1, 1885) evidence recorded in Return of a Birth to
the County Clerk, La Salle, Illinois on February 1, 1885 in
Certificate #8532 (listed as fourth born)
- Child #8 : Richard P. Munn
(b. 1886) whose name and nativity are recorded in both 1900
and 1920 U.S. Census records
- Child #9 : Unknown male Munn
(b. Mar. 31, 1887) evidence recorded in Return of a Birth to
the County Clerk, La Salle, Illinois on March 31, 1887 in Certificate
#10790 (listed as eighth born)
- Child #10 : Bernard P. Munn
(b. 1888) whose name and nativity are recorded in 1900 U.S.
Census record
- Child #11 : Unknown male
Munn (b. Mar. 24, 1889) evidence recorded in Return of a Birth
to the County Clerk, La Salle, Illinois on March 24, 1889 in
Certificate #12700 (listed as ninth born)
- Child #12 : Katherine/Catherine
A. Munn (b. 1891) whose name and nativity are recorded in both
the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Census records
- Child #13 : James J. Munn
(b. 1900) whose name and nativity are recorded in both the 1900
and 1910 U.S. Census records
If the unknown male children listed above
could be correlated to three of the other named sons, the list
of children would number ten.
However, it is very likely that children
#3 and #5, above, are one and the same. This would mean that a
match between only two of the unnamed male children with known
sons would need to be made. The problem is compounded by trying
to match the birth order suggested by the certificates of birth
for the unknown male children.
With these above considerations in mind
and assuming that most of the known given names are correct, the
list of ten children could consist of the following:
#1 : James Munn (1873-1936)
#2 : John Keating Munn (1875-1894)
#3 : Alice Cunningham Munn (b. 1877) - combined with information
for Alice Marion Munn
#4 : Walter Ramsay Munn (b. 1879)
#5 : William Paul Munn (1882-1960)
#6 : Richard P. Munn (b. 1886) - combined with Child #7, above
(birth certificate lists child as the fourth born to this couple)
#7 : Unknown male Munn (b. Mar. 31, 1887) as eighth child born
to this couple
#8 : Bernard P. Munn (b. 1888) - combined with Child #11, above
(birth certificate lists child as the ninth born to this couple
#9 : Catherine Munn (b. 1891)
#10 : James J. Munn (b. 1900)
The final point to make is that the actual
list of children for John and Catherine nee Keating Munn, as of
December 2004, has NOT been confirmed and may never be confirmed.
It is very unfortunate that the names of the unknown males were
NOT recorded. |

HISTORY OF LASALLE COUNTY, Michael
Cyprian O'Byrne
Volume II, Pages 625-627
The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago and New York, 1924.
BERNARD T. KEATING No citizen of Streator has combined
more of the elements of industry, personal and moral courage,
and persistent public spirit in his character than Bernard T.
Keating.
Mr. Keating was born near Bothwell Castle, on the River
Clyde, in Lanarkshire, Scotland, April 14, 1857, son of James
and Alice (Cunningham) Keating. His parents were natives of
Ireland, but for a number of years lived in Scotland. They had
ten sons and one daughter. In 1882 the parents followed their
son to America and lived in Streator, where James Keating died
in 1897, at the age of seventy-five, and his wife, about 1894,
in her sixty-fifth year.
Bernard T. Keating had a boyhood like thousands of
other youths in the mining district, always encompassed by strenuous
labor and near poverty. After a few brief terms of the local
schools he went to work as a pit boy in the coal mines at the
age of nine, and for a number of years he performed the varying
routine of duties underground. In the meantime he sought opportunities
for a better education and for seven years attended a night
school. He was mastering as rapidly as possible the technical
work of mining and finally qualified as an engineer.
In 1879, when he was twenty-two years of age, he came to the
United States, and arrived at Streator with only a single penny
in his pocket. He has kept that penny ever since, and once paid
$7 or $8 to recover it after it had been lost in a fire. In
Streator he worked as a railroad section hand, and subsequently
became a mule driver in one of the Plumb mines. He was promoted
to mule boss, to engineer and finally to mine superintendent,
and in that capacity he was the first to help coal out of the
lower vein in Streator.
For forty years Mr. Keating has been engaged in the
real estate and insurance business. He qualified himself for
the insurance business by the same process of thorough study
and perservering as he had made himself proficient in the technical
details of coal mining. For many years he has been district
manager for the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York, and
he also represents a large number of the standard fire and casualty
insurance companies, including the Law Union and Rock Insurance
Company, the Commonwealth Insurance Company of New York, the
Columbian National Fire Insurance Companv of Mich-igan, the
Michigan Fire and Marine Insurance Company of Detroit, the Sterling
Insurance Companiy of Indiana, and the Tokio Fire & Marine
Insurance Company, Limited. Mr. Keating has been district manager
for the Mutual Life of New York for over twenty-eight years.
For a similar period he has been secretary of the Streator Home
Building and Loan Association, of which he was one of the organizers
and has made this one of the most successful associations of
the kind in the state. His business is now conducted as B. T.
Keating & Son, his son, Frederick J., having been associated
with him since 1920. Mr. Keating is vice president of the Daniel
Heenan Mercantile Company, and since the death of the late Mr.
Heenan has been one of the three trustees of the estate. Since
1920 he has been president of the La Salle County Real Estate
Board.
Mr. Keating has not been inclined toward politics,
yet has exercised his influence in many notable ways for the
good of his community. He has always been identified with the
element in local citizenship standing for law and order and
decency. For many years he was president of the Father Matthew
Total Abstinence Society, was state treasurer of the Catholic
Total Abstinence Union, and at one time was secretary of the
Citizens League and declined nomination as candidate of the
law and order forces for mayor. He served several terms as grand
knight of the Knights of Columbus.
In 1881 Mr. Keating married Miss Helen Lafferty, daughter
of Frederick and Margaret Lafferty, of Streator. She was born
in Pennsylvania, April 24,1856, and died May 20, 1905, at the
age of forty-nine. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Keating,
Margaret, Bernard T., Frederick J., Bessie, Richard and Robert.
Robert died in early childhood. Margaret is now the wife of
Edward P. Dunn, a farmer in Brookfield Toivnship of La Salle
County, and she is the mother of seven children. Bernard T.
married Mary Stringer and lives in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Frederick
J., associated with his father in business, married Helen Casey,
and has one son. Richard F. married Minnie Kirk. The daughter,
Bessie, became the wife of Harry Boatman. Mrs. Boatman died
July 2, 1923.
On February 3, 1921, Mr. Keating married Lillian Brown,
a native of Pontiac, Illinois.

B. T. Keating, Sr., of Streator, president of the La
Salle County Real Estate Board, died at 5 o'clock last evening
at St. Mary's hospital where he had been a patient for two weeks.
His death came as a shock to relatives and many friends, as
his illness had not been regarded as of a critical nature.
...............................
Mr. Keating had been a resident of Streator 47 years,
and played a prominent part in the early development of the
coal mines of that locality. He was a native of Scotland, having
come to Streator from that country. For a number of years he
had been engaged in the insurance and real estate business.
He was married twice, his first wife having died 23
years ago. In 1921 he was united in marriage with Mrs. McGuire,
who survives him. He also leaves three sons, B. T. Keating,
Jr., of Floral City, Fla., Richard and F. J. Keating of Streator,
and Mrs. E. T. Dunn of Streator. Other surviving relatives include
several brothers and sisters.
PERSONAL OBSERVATION: other evidence
indicates that Bernard had nine brothers and ONE sister. At
this time (02/26/2001) it is unclear how many of his brothers
were still living in 1928.
