Birth date per letter(sep. 10 1991) from Betty Cook List of Robert Browns 12 children. LDS, (ch latr day sts) has errant date of 5 apr 1850 . Obituary has Robert`s Birth date as 19 July 1848 1851 census has Robert age 3. therefore, it appears there was no Robert of 1850 (as shown on Robert Brown fam. list of LDS) and only one Robert birth. Survived by wife and these 3 children shown (all of Streator) and bro`s geo. of Thayer, David of Marceline, Mo., Arch. of Wash. and Andrew & sis. Jean Munn of Danville. Last 8 children per 1900 Ill. census (coal st. 529, Streator, Ill.) Agnes Pichon thinks he may have been married twice, as some scandel and he left Thayer Ill. 1871 scot. (taken in June) census has John as age 18, & therefore born in 1852 and not in 1853. LDS list of children of Robert Brown has 2 Johns [11oct 1852 & 13sep1853}. Curiously,Betty Cooks mothers list of the 12 children has the sep date & the 1852 yr. John`s descendants have it that he and his family immigrated to Streator in 1880.

Subject: RE: Your Genealogy page

Partial quotation of email contents

I can tell you that John Munn's brother Walter was certainly an interesting character. He married a Mary Liddell in Cambuslang Lanarkshire Scotland on 31 Dec 1880 this couple are shown in the 1881 census as residing at 98 Flemmington Rows Cambuslang. The following year he reappears in Streator Illinois and re-marrys Jane Brown. Jane already had two illegitimate children of her own.Walter and Jane went on produce four children of their own.

Meantime back in Scotland there would seem to have been an attempt to cover up Walter's departure. In the 1891 census Walter's first wife Mary is shown residing with her parents and her son John Liddell Munn is listed as a son of her father also her marital status is shown as unmarried which is then crossed out and altered to daughter. On John's wedding registration Walter is shown as deceased whereas he was very much alive and enjoying life in Streator.

Hi Bob

I have only just noticed this but have a look at Walter and Jean's marriagedate 22 Apil 1882 and then look at the date of birth for their first child Marion 17 Oct 1882 and see if you come up with the same conclusion I have ie they met in Scotland.I think they fled to avoid the scandal and my guessis that when we do eventually find a ships list both Jean and Walter will beon it.My guess is that they fell off the boat and straight into church.

Regards

Nick

Hi Nick,
Yes, I have seen that year of 1882, and have wondered about that.
He was yet in Scotland with first wife Mary at 98 Fleming Row, Carluke, inthe april 1881 census in Scot.
and then, one year later, married Jean Brown in Streator April 22 of 1882.I have the License copy.
This means he got off the boat went to Streator, and met and married JeanBrown?(maybe met her earlier; on boat, or poss. even in Scot.?) all in 3 1/2 months.
Because of all this I have leaned toward 1881 of his arrival.(But, maybethis is why I haven`t found them).

The more I analyze this couple, I`m begininng to suspect that since Jeanand her family were also 1881 residents of Carluke (address of HarestanesMeadow) she and Walter may well have had something going on there. Makingthe 1882 arrival date a bit more plausable.

Its been thought by the Brown elders I have talked to, that this Brownfamily all arrived together and to a southern port(New Orleans or poss. onein Alabama)

I forget what the 1910 census has for Jean`s arrivial. Wasn`t that partof a recent email from Jim Keating?
The Ellis Island stuff starts in 1892 so they`re not there.

I did find a film of one ship in the nat`l archives (ship films also availthrough the Church of the Later Day Saints. A branch office of theirs nearyou?) here that came to New Orleans in 1881 and looked at the film of itspassenger list, but no Jean (or any other of her family) nor any Munns.

Walter`s older brother, John may be of interest to find also , I think he arrived (per 1910 census?) in 1880.

I wish you luck, --if anyone can you can.
Bob
