Town of HaIcott

The town of Halcott is the smallest in the county and separated from its associates by high mountains, which have no gaps or cloves to render it easily accessible, excepting from the west and south, through Delaware county. The roads over these mountains are steep, difficult, and little used. The town was named for George W. Halcott, a son of Thomas Halcott, who is buried in a field near Halcott Center. It is a part of the Hardenburgh Patent, and is divided into four valleys by the sources of the east branches of the Delaware. The first town meetIng was held in the house of James D. Vandenburg, April 6, 1852, and the following officials were elected:
George Lawrence Supervisor

Oct 21, 1871: A Suspicious Affair.
Last Wednesday afternoon Mr. John Applebee was driving home, on the road from Pierce creek to the Nemaha, when he overtook a man and a girl in a buggy. As Mr. Applebee drove up, he saw that the girl was crying and struggling to get out of the buggy. The man who held her threatened Mr. A. if he should undertake to interfere, and drove rapidly on, regardless of the girl's screams. He drove out of sight in a short time, as it was growing dark, and nothing more was seen of the couple.
Upon information being given here of the occurrence, Sheriff Freeman accompanied by Jack Pthoud, drove up to the Nemaha to endeavor to ascertain the facts of the matter, and if the rascal had been guilty of an outrage, to arrest him; but nothing could be learned leading to the discovery of his whereabouts, or the girl's, and they returned to town.

June 12, 1873: Adultery.--
An elderly man named John Applebee living on Bear Creek, in this county, was arrested last week, on complaint of Miss Elizabeth Fisher, a young woman, who charged Applebee with the paternity of a child born to her on the 11th of last month, and who implored the assistance of the law to compel him to support his offspring.
The case was argued for the prosecution by Griggs & Ashby, before Squire Lamb, who took the bond of Applebee, in the sum of $2,000 to support the child.
Yesterday the wife of the old sinner Applebee commenced an action against him for adultery, and also sued for a divorce. The poor woman evidently thinks she can get along without such a companion.

PERSONAL OBSERVATION: it appears that John Applebee and his divorced wife, Mary Ellen, were living in the same household in 1880 with the family of their son, Johnny. John and Mary Ellen had divorced in November of 1873. A daughter was born on May 11, 1873 to John Applebee and a young girl, Elizabeth Fisher. The brother, Burt, mentioned in the above census of 1880 MAY BE a son, of legitimate birth, of John Applebee and Elizabeth Fisher (who is stated elsewhere to have been born in Germany). Other records show that John married Elizabeth Fisher in December of 1874. The Census of 1880 also shows that Elizabeth Applebee was living on her brother's farm at this time (see below). AND ALSO LIVING WITH HER WAS A DAUGHTER, CHRISCHNA APPLEBEE, born about 1873. Apparently one child, Burt Applebee, of John and Elizabeth nee FISHER Applebee was living with the father in 1880, while the older daughter, Chrischna, was living with her mother on her uncle's farm.
