HALCOTT CENTER
When Amass Hill kept the post office it was named Halcott Center.
Among business enterprises was the store of Ralph Coe south of the
M. E. Church, and here also was the inn. Another inn or tavern was
that of Nathan Applebee. There was a saw mill in 1824, an ashery about
1816, and the blacksmith shop of Richard Norris. Before the town as
a town came into existence, a post office was kept at Conger Avery's,
who was the postmaster. The post office was then. West Lexington,
and the mail came from Prattsville to Griffin's Corners once a week;
later it became semi-weekly.

Dear Cousin,
When I met you at the library in Ottawa
this past Summer I didn't know who your Nathan Applebee was. I knew
he existed but he had always been a mystery to me. You may already
have all this but I think I may have some help for you. We didn't
get much time to talk but I got the impression you didn't know who
Nathan's parents were. I have picked up bits of information that has
some answers for both of us. First I want to say I got the best info
from Janice Twinam of 730 Perdock Ct., Washington, IA 52353. It was
a court action in LaSalle County that involved the divorce of John
Applebee. John is an ancestor of Janice as well as yours. You will
want to get a copy for your records and when you do I would appreciate
one also. I'll gladly pay for my copies.
This court action, about 1853, has
much family information. It tells that John is the father of your
Nathan and that John's father was Nathan Applebee (Senior). It also
has a deposition by Nathan Applebee Junior. Your Nathan's mother would
have been Sally Brooks who was a sister to my Martin Brooks. All these
people except Sally came to Illinois from Greene County New York.
My Martin Brooks married Hannah Applebee a sister to John.
Here are some land records that you
should get copies for yourself. Deed book #53, pages 732-73S and deed
book #102, page 206. The first record has a number of people relinquishing
their rights to a 40 acre parcel to this same John Applebee. The second
record is a release by Nathan Applebee (junior) and his wife Phebe
(Halcott) and mentions the they are heirs of the estate of a Nathan
Applebee. Until proven otherwise I believe these people are all the
children of Nathan Applebee Senior. The divorce and the release show
that Nathan Senior must have died after the divorce and before December
1854,
Janice can provide you with a copy
of a marriage record for John Applebee after he had moved to Nebraska.
It states his parents were Nathan Applebee and Maria Van Valkenburgh.
I have nothing on the Van Valkenburghs except that there were a many
in Greene County, NY. I am very pleased to have run across Janice
because she cleared up most of the questions I had about the LaSalle
County Applebees. If you didn't have any of this then I'm pleased
to have been able to help you also. In any event take a look at the
records above and give me your thoughts on "our" family.
Good luck with the research and hope to hear from you soon. Take care.
Your Cousin
[Signed] Warren Brooks

This cemetery is also known as the
Wightman Cemetery. It is on lot 11, town of Wirt. This was the original
Wightman farm taken up by Edward H Wightman, early settler and member
of the first town Board. He gave the land for the cemetery. Edward
and his wife Sarah A. Almy are buried in this cemetery but have no
markers. It contains about one acre, located on a town road leading
east from County Route 8. It is visible from Route 8, parts of which
are known as the "Pleasant Valley Road."
