LT COL. IBBOTAON, A LEADING CITIZEN AND SOLDIER, DEAD. (From clipping of June 18/1910)

Formerly commanded 5th. Royal Highlanders, and will have imposing military funeral.

After an illness of several months, Lt. Col. Ibbotson passed away last night. He had been in failing health since the early part of the year, and had been confined to his house at 176 Mansfield St. since Easter. The funeral is to be held tomorrow afternoon from Christ Church Cathedral. The funeral will be a military one. The firing party and escort is to be furnished by the 5th. Royal Highlanders, a regiment which the late Lt Col. commanded for several years. The headquarters staff and other regiments will also be represented.

The late Lt Col. Ibbotson was born in 1855 and came of a family of soldiers. His father, the late Capt. Benjamin Ibbotson, was one of the organizers of the 6th. Fusiliers, and his grandfather, Capt. Henry Ibbotson, marched from Halifax to Zuebec with the 103rd Foot to take part In the engagement at Lundy' lane in 1813. His four brothers have at different times been connected with the local militia. The deceased Colonel's connection with military life extended over a period of over 35 years. he first joined the Hochelaga Light Infantry in 1868, and later in 1871 Identified himself with the Victoria Rifles, from which regiment he retired after after a service of four years. In 1881 he took a. comrnision in the Royal Scots and passed through all the grades until he finally assumed command. of the resident in 1898, succeeding Lt Col. Strathy.

After his five year tenure of command had passed, he was transferred to the reserve of officers, remaining on the list till the time of his death. In 1895 he was elected president of the Montreal Military Institute and always took an active interest I. , the affairs of that organization. The late Col. Ibbotson took a deep interest in rifle shooting. and commanded the Canadian Bisley Team In 1894. He did much to encourage the younger men of his regiment at the ranges, and waLs himself an excellent shot, winning many important trophies for his skill at the targets.

He was 22 years a member of the Executive of the Province of Quebec Rifle Association and for 12 years chairman of that committee. He resigned a little over a year ago. Like most of the officers in the City he began his military career as a private in the Victoria Rifles, No. 2 Company. Some years ago he was appointed brigadier of the 18th Brigade in this district , and was at all times a very efficient and popular officer.

In civil life the late Colonel was a surgeon dentist, and enjoyed an extensive practice in the city. He obtained his degree in 1880, and in 1892 was appointed to the Dental Board of Examiners, later becoming treasurer of that body. He was a justice of the peace, a governor of the Montreal General Hospital, and surgeon dentist to the Royal Victoria Hospital. He was the first president of the Odontological Society of this province, standing high in the esteem of his professional confreres.

He was married in 1887 to Fanny Louisa Gault daughter of the late Mr. Mr. H. Gault M.P. who with eight children survive him. He leaves in addition, four brothers and five sisters; Mr. George Ibbotson of Edmonton, Dr. J.S. and Dr. Frank Ibbotson and Mr. Harry Ibbotson of Montreal; Mrs. E. F. Leonard of London, Ont., Mrs. Knapp, New York Mrs. R.E. Aikman, Parsboro, N.S. and Miss Emma Ibbotson, Montreal. Another sister was only married last Monday to Dr.F.A. Kendall of Buffalo.

Fanny Louisa Gault [Parents] was born on 13 May 1865. She died on 14 Sep 1942 in at her residence, 66 Rosemount Crescent, Westmount, Canada. She married Edward Benjamin Ibbotson Dr. Col. on 23 Sep 1887 in Braehead House, McTavish St., Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Fanny was baptized in Jun 1867.

Many friends and acquaintances gathered this afternoon at the Church of St. James the Apostle to pay tribute to the memory of the late Mrs.E.B. Ibbotson, daughter of the late M.H. Gault M.P. and wife of the late Col. E.B. Ibbotson former commanding officer of the Black Watch (R.H.R.) of Canada. Mrs. Ibbotson died on Monday at her residence, 66 Rosemount Crescent, Westmount. The service was conducted by reverend F.H. Wilkinson, with the Rev. H.M. Shore assisting.

The chief mourners were one of her three sons, E. Selvryn Ibbotson; her four daughters, Mrs. C. S Lyman, Miss H.M. Ibbotson, Mrs. 14.E. Macfarlane and Mrs. G D McTaggart; three brothers, vercy R. Gault, C Ernest Gault and Mr. Henry Gault. Mrs. Ibbotson's two other sons
Lt Col. M.L. Ibbotson and Major M.G. Ibbotcon are on active service with the Black Watch.

Obituary
Colonel Ibbotson died on Monday September 16th, 1974, at the Royal Victoria Hospital. He was born in Montreal in 1897, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. E. B. Ibbotson.
Colonel Ibbostson, a veteran of both wars, joined The Black Watch (RHR) of Canada at an early age. His family has long been associated with this old and honoured Regiment. after training with the 73rd Battalion during thee arly years of World War I, he was posted to the 13th Battalion (Black Watch) in France with the rank of Lieutenant. He was seriously wounded and his services were recognized by his being mentioned in dispatches.
During the Interval between the wars, Colonel Ibbotson remained active in the Reginement and was prompted to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and commanded the 42nd Reserve battalion.
In 1939 at the outbreak of World War II, he again volunteered for active duty and reverted to the rank of Major, Second-in-Command of the 1st Battalion, Black Watch. Later he became the training staff officer of the Canadian Reinforcements in England under Major-General Phelan with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He returned to Canada during the latter part of the war and was appointed G.S.O., Training to the director-general of the Reserve Army at National Defence Headquarters. At the end of the war he returned to the Black Watch and assumed command of the Regiment witht he rank of full Colonel.
Most of his business life was spent in financial circles with the firms of Newan Sweezy and Molson & Company. A keen golf and curling enthusiast, Colonel Ibbotson was a life member of the Royal Montreal Golf Club; life member and past president of the Royal Montreal Curling Club; life member of the Monreal Amateur Athletic Association, and a 50 year member of the Sir Arthur Currie Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was also life-long member of the Church of St. James the Apostle.
He is survived by one brother, Lieutenant-Colonel Mathew G. Ibbotson, E.D.; and two sisters, Gweena (Mrs. W.E. Macfaralane) and Lois (Mrs. G.D. McTaggart). Also many nieces and newphews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

The Funeral was held at the Church of St. James the Apostle on Wednesday September 18th, 1974 at 2:00pm.
