Matthew Hamilton Gault [Parents] was born on 18 Jul 1821 in Strabane, County of Tyrone, Ireland. He died 1 on 1 Jun 1887 in Montreal, Canada. He was buried on 4 Jun 1887 in Mount Royal Cemetery L-71, Montreal Quebec Canada. He married Elizabeth Joanna Bourne on 25 May 1854 in St. George's Church, Montreal, Canada. Matthew was employed as Fire Marine & Life insurance agent in 1861 in 43 St. Francis Xavier. He was employed as Agent for life & fire assurance in 1853 in 201½ St. Paul. He resided in 1861 in 73 Drummond near Sherbrooke, Montreal, Canada. He resided in 1869 in Braehead House, 148 McTavish St, Montreal, Canada.
Matthew Hamilton Gault, the eldest surviving son of Leslie Gault and Mary Hamilton, was born in the town of Strabane, County of Tyrone, on 18th July, 1821, and received his education at the private school of the Rev. Charles Allan, Presbyterian Minister. Mr. Allan was considered one of the best classical scholars in the north of Ireland and the youths, who were educated by him, never forgot his faithfulness and severity.
When he was fifteen, Matthew Hamilton Gault sustained a fall from a spirited horse, which severely injured his spine and gave a shock to his nervous system, from which he never completely recovered. After being confined to a sofa for twelve months, he returned to school, but found his former classmates so far advanced that he became discouraged and begged to be allowed to leave. So for some time he roamed the countryside, fishing, shooting and hunting rabbits with his ferrets. This mode of life was brought to a close by his father's business losses. When he saw that it was necessary for him to earn his own living, he wrote to his father's correspondents in London, Liverpool and Glasgow and was offered a situation in the Banking House of H. & J. Johnson, London. But it seemed hard to be parted from his family and it was decided, after asking for God's guidance that he should go to Canada. The "Marchioness of Abercorn" was making her fall voyage and that vessel was chosen as the captain and mate had sailed the "Leslie Gault", and the family felt it would be more agreeable to be under his care.
After landing in Quebec in 1842, they went to Montreal, which then had a population of 45,000. They intended to spend the winter in Montreal and then move west, but circumstances prevented this. His father died within nine months of their arrival in Canada, and his mother, having been ill since the day she landed, was ordered back to Ireland by her doctor. This left a youth of 22, without any experience, to look after a large family.
After trying for a situation without success, Matthew Hamilton commenced business and the family practiced strict economy. But even that would have been insufficient, if money had not arrived from the sale of property in Ireland. Then the Montreal Savings Bank failed, in which he had placed money, and he decided to purchase a farm, which could not run away. But after three years hard work, it was abandoned as unprofitable. The loss in purchase and outlay having been $7,000.
In 1851 the Agency of the Insurance Companies of British America and Mutual Life of New York was obtained and to this business he fully devoted his energies. Later he became the President of the Exchange Bank of Canada, Director of the Montreal Loan & Mortgage Co. founded 1858, Director of the Richelieu and Ont. Nav. Co. founded 1859, Managing Director, Sun Mutual Life Insurance Co., founded 1871, Director of the Windsor Hotel Co., Trustee and Treasurer, Mount Royal Cemetery Co., and a Freeman of the City of London, England. He was for many years a volunteer in the Garrison Artillery, and the first Captain to uniform his company at the request of Baron de Rottenburgh. He founded the Irish Protestant Benevolent Society, the parent of all these societies in Canada. He was warden of Christ Church Cathedral for four years, and helped largely to collect $44,000 to wipe off the debt on the building subscription, and was senior warden to transfer the building to Bishop Fulford in the Consecration.
Politically a Conservative, and a great friend of Sir John A. MacDonald and Sir Geo. E. Cartier, whom he looked upon as the most advanced and independent Frenchman in Canada, he was a fast friend of the "party" generally. He became a member of Parliament for Town of Montreal West from 1878 to 1887.
He had two houses: Braehead, McTavish Street, Montreal and Rockcliffe, Cacouna. M.H. Gault left a leger which his grandson Leslie had circa 1973 and within that leger the following entries were recorded from 1856 through to 1867 commencing with $11,542.60 rising every year to $73,068. in 1867. Within the ledger it appears as if M.H. purchased the property 148 McTavish St. [known within the family as Braehead] in 1869 for $22,500 and finished paying for it in 1873.
Braehead was built in the English Gothic style by James Brown in 1861 for Orrin S. Wood, the manager of Allan's Montreal Telegraph Company, constructed of Montreal limestone taken from the demolished house of Simon McTavish which previously occupied the site. In 1879, Wood sold the house to Matthew H. Gault, who lived in it for many years before giving it to the army as a convalescence hospital for disabled soldiers. George H. Duggan bought Braehead in 1929 and occupied it until 1944, at which time he donated it to McGill University. In 1946, after Duggan had passed away, McGill's School of Commerce moved in a passage constructed between it and Purvis Hall next door. 1975, Braehead underwent a general renovation and in 1977 it was allotted to the Faculty of Education which needed more room.
It was stated by MHG's grandson that Braehead had been built in 1848 and that the story of the house says original the owner hanged himself thus the stories of it's being haunted. The above text appears to disprove this interesting family anecdote.
Matthew Hamilton Gault and his wife Elizabeth Bourne had sixteen children, five of whom died in infancy.
Matthew Hamilton Gault died in his Montreal residence on June Ist, 1887, and was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery on 4th June, many citizens attended his funeral.

In 1854, when comparatively a young man, he started in the wholesale dry goods business in partnership with J. B. Stevenson, under the name of Gault, Stevenson & Co. After a few years the firm dissolved partnership and A.F. Gault was joined by his brother, Robert L. Gault, the firm's name being changed to Gault Brothers. Shortly afterwards Samuel Finley, a brother-in-law, was admitted to partnership, and the name was changed to Gault Bros. & Co. A.F. continued in the role as President of the company and it became one of Canada's leading drygoods firms. Laterly, after Samuel Finley retired, R. W. MacDougall and Leslie H. Gault were admitted to the firm.
He appeared on the Magog scene with a plan for amalgamation of several textile firms - that plan and Andrew Gault proved the salvation of the Magog Cotton and Print Company and of Magog's textile future. Well aware of the information that Moore had turned up a few years earlier, which showed that Canada was endeavouring to support too many cotton mills, A.F. undertook a far-reaching amlgamation. The Dominion Cotton Mills Company was formed to carry out the plan. It was believed that if the numerous small cotton manufacturing plants located in Eastern Canada, each with their separate managements, selling staffs and purchasing divisions, could be welded into one organization, the Canadian cotton industry could be placed on a less shaky foundation.
The Dominion Cotton Company Limited was formally incorporated in 1890 with Gault as its president, and included controlling interests in mills at Halifax and Windsor, N.S., Moncton, N.B., Magog, Coaticook, St. Ann's and Hochelaga, in Quebec, and Kingston and Brantford, Ontario. The Magog mill was to be converted from a print works to a bleachery for whitewear goods. It was found that the waters of Lake Memphremagog were free from minerals. The decision was strengthened in view of the insecure financial position of the print works.
He also was President of the Montreal Cotton Company of Valleyfield, Que.; of the Stormont Cotton Company of Cornwall; of the Montmorenci Cotton Manufacturing Company Que.; of the Globe Woollen Mills Company, Montreal; and of the Trent Valley Woollen Manufacturing Company at Campbellford. Ont.
A.F. was also a Director of the City and District Savings Bank, and the Liverpool, London and Globe Insurance Company, and also connected with all the leading benevolent societies. In educational matters he was one of the Governors of McGill College.
It is largely due to his beneficence that the Montreal Diocesan College owes its existence, as the college building was presented by him to the Lord Bishop of Montreal. He was one of the leading members of the Church of England in Montreal, and was once treasurer of the Synod. His residence on Sherbrooke street was regarded as one of the finest in the city, and was looked upon as one of the principal sights of Canada's commercial centre.
