A funeral service for Dr. A. Norman Shaw, 77, for many years professor of physics and formally chairman of the department at McGill University, was held today from the chapel of Hos C, Wary & Bro. 1234 Mountain street. Professor Shaw, widely known as a scientist and scholar, died suddenly Wednesday at his home, 2125 Sunset road, Town of Mount Royal.Born in Huddersfield, England, he was educated in Bermuda, at Montreal High School, McGill University, and Cambridge University, where he studied under the British physicist, Sir J.J. Thomson. At McGill he came under the influence of Lord Rutherford, the pioneer atomic physicist. Professor Shaw, who had wanted to be a chemist, switched to physics. He received his BA from McGill in 1908, with first class honours in mathematics and physics and a scholarship in chemistry and physics. He was awarded the R. O. King research fellowship and obtained his master's degree in 1910, with the Governor-General's medal for research. He lectured in physics for a year and was then awarded an 1851 Exhibition scholarship which took him to Cambridge for two years. Returning, he was made a lecturer in physics at McGill. Duringing World War I he was second-in-command of the McGill COTC and also took part in the war research with Dr. L. V. King.
He was granted his doctorate at McGill in 1915. In 1918 he was appointed associate professor on the staff of the department of physics and promoted to full professorship in 1926. He succeeded Dean A.S. Eve as chairman of the department. In 1952 he retired after 46 years association with the University. In presenting him for an honorary doctorate, Prof. J. S. Foster, who succeeded him as physics chairman, said that Professor Shaw was "a McGill man whose whole life as scholar, teacher and administrator has demonstrated deep affection for the University".Widely read, Professor Shaw was at home in literature and philosophy as well as the sciences. Other interests included chess, bridge, golf and astronomy.
