When the war ended, Bob was flown back to England after being a P.O.W. for nearly four years. Two years in Italy and nearly two years in Germany. Michael, his son, had had his third birthday before he saw his father. When Michael was told that his Dad was coming home he used to say "Will he bring me a bicycle?" When Bob came home he was very thin. He had been almost starved. Germany had very little food towards the end of the war. After his return he never enjoyed very good health. He was a stone mason by trade but often was away from work through ill health. When he came home the Highgrove Farm cottage was empty, so between them all they managed to redecorate it. Wallpaper was unobtainable - there was some but not enough matching paper so they used two different papers, pasting on the two papers alternately, giving a striped effect. One could only buy with coupons and dockets. Very little pretty china - the war time china was mostly white, not real china but sort of a stone ware. One became very tired of this nearly white ware but they managed. Everyone knew they had to. People did not grumble nearly so much in those days and they all knew that they had to pull up their sleeves and work hard and long and was just what the did.
