Amos Chinn [Parents] was born on 20 Nov 1722 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. He died on 7 Dec 1811 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. He was buried 1 on 7 Dec 1811 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. He married 2, 3 Elizabeth Light on 5 Jan 1741/1742 in Cann, Dorset, UK. Amos was baptized 4 on 20 Nov 1722 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. He was of the Anglican faith.

Extract from a note received from Janet Bolton who, as of 2003, was residing at Amos' house, which was latterly willed to his daughter Jane Dawson; note reads as follows:

The original house had four rooms, each 7 ft. x 10 ft. There was no staircase, just a ladder which went up through a hole in the centre of the house. We still have the hook in the ceiling which was used for pulling up things too big to carry. In the mid 19th century 4 large rooms were built in the front and in Victorian times it was extended at the back. Now, the original house forms a third of my kitchen, a quarter of the sitting room and two rooms upstairs which are too small to be bedrooms. I use one as an office and am writing to you from there.

I [Janet Bolton] have traced the house back, through the land registry, to 1725. It is older than that but no means of dating it. It was owned by Chinns from 1725. The great mystery is why it was never owned by the Estate - every other house in the village was. The lane on which it is situated was called Turnpike Road in the 19th century and I wonder if the cottage was originally a Toll House.

The present bay windows were added this century - I have a photograph of about 1900 showing the Georgian sash windows but it is too poor to scan.

You probably know all this but Amos Chin, born 20th Nov. 1722 was the son of Amos and Rebecca. His wife was Elizabeth and she died in 13. May 1773. Their daughter Jane or jenny was born 20 Sept. 1764 and died in Sturminster 17 Sept 1861 aged 91. Amos himself died 7 Dec. 1811 aged 90 so you come from a long-lived family !

You may be interested to hear about the selling prices of the cottage. Jane sold the house in 1848 for £40, but stayed on as a tenant for a half yearly rent. The new owner, Martin Rake, sold it in 1882 for £200. It was sold again in 1892 for £180 and again in 1924 for £399. An unexplained £740 was paid for it in 1925, then in 1926 its sale price was back to £475. In 1928 it fetched £500, in 1950 £2,500. In 1960 the adjoining 1 acre field was purchased from the Estate for £120 and this is now my garden. In 1973 it changed hands for £16,000 and we bought it in 1993 for £115,000. I think its value has probably trebled in the last 10 years. Fascinating stuff !

Elizabeth Light was born in 1725. She died on 13 May 1773 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. She was buried 1 on 13 May 1773 in Hinton St. Mary, St Peter's Church. She married 2, 3 Amos Chinn on 5 Jan 1741/1742 in Cann, Dorset, UK.

It is more than likely that Elizabeth is from Marnhull, seeing as John was baptised there after having already been baptised in Hinton St. Mary.

John Tucker was born in Stour Provost, Dorset, Uk. He married 1 Mary Chin on 13 Feb 1773 in Hinton St. Mary.

This may be the same John Tucker buried Feb 9, 1799 at Hinton St. Mary - verification required.

Mary Chin [Parents] was born on 14 Jul 1754 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. She died on 27 Sep 1801 in Stour Provost, Dorset, UK. She was buried 1 on 27 Sep 1801 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. She married 2 John Tucker on 13 Feb 1773 in Hinton St. Mary. Mary was baptized 3 on 14 Jul 1754 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. She joined religion Anglican.

(P182 RE4) Burial recorded in Archives of Hinton St. Mary 1760-1812 verified by Brian B. Chinn and by his agent Mrs. Wienstock. In the burial record it is noted that Mary [Chinn] Tucker was of Stower Provost, thus it is believed that she lived there, but was buried in the Chinn family cemetery in Hinton St. Mary.

Mary is identified on the last will and testament of her father as Mary Tucker, one of the children amongst whom the estate was to be divided equally.

A Christopher Tucker of Stour Provost was buried December 19,1802 at Hinton St. Mary - This may have been a son - requires verification

They had the following children:

John Butt Chin is identified on the last will and testament of his father, inherited his father's house and was one of the children amongst whom the residue of the estate was to be divided equally.

It requires verification to determine if this is the John Chin who married Sand or Laud Plumleigh, in London, however the dates appear to correspond and the son of this marriage also bearing the name John Butt Chin is an extreme coincidence which merits investigation.

Sand (or Laud) Plumleigh.Sand married John Butt Chin on 8 Sep 1797 in St. Michaels, Cornhill, London, UK.

They had the following children:

  M i John Butt Chin

Amos Chinn [Parents] was born on 9 Dec 1787 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. He died on 11 Feb 1852 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. He was buried on 11 Feb 1852 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. (P182 RE4) Baptism & Burials recorded in Archives of Hinton St. Mary 1759-1812 [baptisms continued] verified by Brian B. Chinn and by his agent Mrs. Wienstock.

Recorded in the 1841 Census of Hinton St. Mary as Amos, labourer aged 50 wife Elizabeth. Amos would have been 54 in 1841. Recorded in the 1851 census as of Hinton St. Mary, folio 220.3, as being aged 63.

Elizabeth Cox was born in 1787 in Sturminster Newton, Dorset, UK. She died on 7 Jun 1843. She was buried on 7 Jun 1843 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. She married Amos Chinn on 29 Apr 1811 in Manston, Dorset, UK.

Recorded in the 1841 Census of Hinton St. Mary as Elizabeth aged 50 wife of Amos Chin. It is thought she would have been 53 in 1841. Recorded in the 1851 census, folio 220.3, as aged 64, older than her husband Amos, which if correct would corroborate her year of birth as 1787. The 1851 census states her place of birth as Sturminster (assumed this to be Sturminster Newton).

They had the following children:

  M i Amos Chinn
M ii James Chinn was born on 16 Jun 1816. He died on 20 Apr 1845 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. He was buried on 20 Apr 1845 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. James was baptized on 16 Jun 1816 in Manston, Dorset, UK. He was of the Anglican faith.

Recorded in the 1871 Census of Hinton St. Mary as Amos [of Manston], Agricultural Labourer, aged 58, wife Eliza. This was his second wife whom he married in 1863.

Two daughters are reflected here - Ellen and Eliza. It is presumed that they are daughters of Eliza from her previous marriage which would imply that her first marriage was to an Arnold, however the record states her name as Eliza Arnold Duffet and the 1871 Census of Hinton St. Mary Lists Ellen and Eliza as being daughter-in-laws. This could mean that they are in fact the sisters of Eliza's late husband rather than the offspring of that marriage. The exact circumstances are not known other than the two spinsters, Ellen and Eliza Arnold aged 20 and 10, were living with Amos and Eliza [Arnold Duffet] by 1871 along with their son Amos.

Due to the advanced ages of Amos and Eliza it must be considered also that Amos jr. may in fact be the child of another Chinn which they were raising but this appears unlikely.

Recorded in the 1881 Census of Hinton St. Mary as Amos [of Manston] born 1809

Mary Dowding [Parents] was born in 1809 in Sturminster Newton, Dorset, UK. She died on 11 Jan 1865 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. She was buried on 11 Jan 1865 in Hinton St. Mary, Dorset, UK. Other marriages:
Arnold,

Recorded in the 1871 Census of Hinton St. Mary as Eliza from Stalbridge, aged 50, wife of Amos.

Eliza was a widow prior to marrying Amos. Two daughters are reflected here - Ellen and Eliza. It is presumed that they are daughters of Eliza from her first marriage which would imply that her first marriage was to an Arnold, however the record states her name as Eliza Arnold Duffet and the 1871 Census of Hinton St. Mary Lists Ellen and Eliza as being daughter-in-laws. The exact circumstances are not known other than the two spinsters, Ellen and Eliza Arnold aged 20 and 10, were living with Amos and Eliza [Arnold Duffet] Chinn by 1871 along with their son Amos.

Another possibility is that Eliza was an Arnold and that these are in fact younger sisters, sisters-in-law to Amos.

Due to the advanced ages of Amos and Eliza it must be considered also that Amos jr. may in fact be the child of another Chinn which they were raising but this appears unlikely.

They had the following children:

F i Ellen Arnold was born in 1851.

Recorded in the 1871 Census of Hinton St. Mary as Ellen from Sturminster Newton, aged 20, daughter-in-law.
