Mary was a flamboyant individual who carried herself with presence and flair. Her marriage to Thayle lasted 24 years and though she seldom spoke of him, she remained loyal and dedicated to him. In later years Thayle was confined to a convalescent home, and Mary frequently visited him.

Thayle and Mary had no children. For this reason she took great interest in her grand-niece and grand-nephews. Brian B. Chinn corresponded with her frequently and they maintained a close relationship for many years. Allan and Sandra both visited California in 1969 with their grandmother Wanda, and all four of them enjoyed a surprise trip to Hawaii which Mary had arranged. It being a surprise the other three had no idea where they were headed until actually boarding the aircraft.

Generous in nature, she also had a relaxed view on life. When her sister Wanda was widowed she immediately offered that she should move to San Francisco and live with her there. Unfortunately, Wanda was unaccustomed to the lifestyle and it soon began to take a toll on her health. Her son Norman suspected that things were not going well and travelled to San Francisco to determine just how his mother was. It became apparent that she had injured her back, had been remaining in bed and was generally in poor condition. What particularly aggravated the situation was that Mary had always enjoyed her evening jug of martini. Wanda previous to this had been a non-drinker. The daily consumption was well beyond Wanda's capacity and left her pretty much incapacitated. As a result, Norman packed up his mother and her things and immediately brought her back to Montreal. Mary, particularly incensed with the implied insult to her character never spoke to her nephew or her grand-niece and grand-nephews again.

Her lawyer managed most of her affairs in the later years. Her entire estate was divided among charities including an orphanage in Poland.
