                  THE FAMILY OF SAMUEL LANTZ

    Samuel Lantz, son of Christian and Esther (Mussel-
man) Lantz was born Aug. 5, 1794.  During the War of 1812,
he served as a private in Captain Shryook's company of
Infantry, First Regiment, Maryland Militia from July 23,
1814 to Jan. 10, 1815.  Jan. 10, 1822, he married Elizabeth
Fehl, of Lancaster, Pa., a daughter of Jacob Fehl and
a niece of Frederick and Lewis Ziegler.  He was a
tanner.  Early in the 30's, in partnership with Dr. Frederick
Byer, he purchased the store of Fletcher and Stonebraker in
Leitersburg.  He purchased the brick building at the corner
of the public square in which Josephus Ground afterwards
lived and which was bequeathed to his heirs and is now
owned by his granddaughters, Mrs. Lederer and Misses

    Emily and Josephine Lantz.  He was a Lutheran.  He died
Jan. 10, 1841 and is buried at St. Paul's Evangelical Church,
Leitersburg.  His descendents are:

   1. Oliver Frederick Lantz, born Sept. 20, 1828. Began his
      career as a clerk in the store of David M. Good.  In
      1847, entered the employ of Martin and Hobson, grain
      commission merchants, Baltimore, Md., with whom he
      held the position of salesman and bookkeeper for seven
      years.  He was associated in business with Wm.  H.
      Hager for several months in 1854 and then entered
      the firm of Samuel Elder & Co. In 1866, Mr. Elder died
      and Jacob Lantz succeeded to his interest in the busi-
      ness.  After his death, it was continued by Oliver F.
      individually.  He was a director in the Corn and Flour
      Exchange and in the National Exchange Bank.  He
      was a Lutheran and in 1877 was elected Treasurer of
      the Board of Foreign Missions of the General Synod of
      the Lutheran Church.  He died Jan. 5, 1907.  Dec. 4,
