LANTZ GENEALOGY
Maryland. From here they spread out over the states of
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, and south through
the Western part of Virginia, including West Virginia and
North Carolina.
These colonists after a hard trip down the Rhine Valley
to Rotterdam, were loaded on small coasting vessels (whence
the name "Bilander"). The trip usually took about six
months although in some instances they were on the Atlantic
over a year. The boats were small and crowded and the suf-
fering was intense and great numbers of them died on
the way over.
As a rule they arranged to pay their passage over by
selling their services for a certain number of years after
landing in Philadelphia. A man was usually bound out for
three years and most of the children were bound out until
they reached their majority. This enabled them to learn
the nature, customs, and peculiarities of the new country
before starting out for themselves.
