Ritterbusch and Ritterbush are fairly unusual surnames in the USA. There seem to be a few other people researching this surname, but so far we have not been able to find a link with anyone else. In documents from the 1800's we have seen our family's name spelled as both Ritterbusch and Ritterbush, but from Tim's grandfather and down Ritterbusch with a "c" seems to be the spelling that won out. I am afraid we don't know any German, so further research in Germany will prove difficult. We would love to hear from other people researching this name, I am sure that eventually we can find a connection. Click on the link at the top of the page to view our entire family tree.

Tim's 2nd great-grandfather, GEORGE EDWARD RITTERBUSCH , was born in Prussia/Germany in about 1844-1848. In the 1920 census it says he immigrated to the US in 1850, when he was a very young child, probably with his parents. George married, ELIZABETH BUTLER, on December 25, 1865 in Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, USA. They had 11 children, 8 of whom were still living in 1900. Their children were born in various places, including New York, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Illinois. The family eventually settled in the Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois area. George seems to have worked as a farm laborer. There is a story that he owned a box factory in Chicago and that the factory was destroyed in the great Chicago Fire. After that George became depressed and took to drinking. He eventually separated from his wife and was not living with her during the 1900 or 1920 censuses. He died December 4, 1922 in Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois and is buried there in Woodlawn Cemetery. His wife, Elizabeth, died February 28, 1927 and is buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.
