Webb Family History
My earliest known Webb is George and his
wife Nancy Rock. According to census information
George was born about 1803 in Virginia. Nancy was born about 1807 in
Virginia also. They were married 17 July 1826 in Giles Co., Virginia
and to this union had 11 children. One of which is my second great
grandmother, Sarah J. Webb Hedrick.
I have not gone past George, as I have received lots of
conflicting information on who his parents were. Some say his father
was a George, some say a John Webb was his
father.
By 1850, George and family are living in Marion, Grant
Co., Indiana, and by 1860 they are no longer listed in the census, and all
of the children are either married or living in other homes. This
leads me to believe that George and Nancy died before 1860.
The oldest possible son, James A. Webb, was born
about 1829 in Virginia according to census records. After 1850 he is
in Indiana living with his parents and siblings. I can not find
James after 1850 due to the fact that there are many James Webbs in this
area. He may have enlisted in the service during the Civil War in
the 20th Infantry Regiment Indiana. There were no marriage records
or census records in Grant Co., Indiana for James. I did find a
James and Sarah Webb in Huntington Co., Indiana in the 1860
census. The age is not a match, this James was 27, mine would have
been 31 in 1860. And this 1860 James was born in Pennsylvania
[according to the census].
Perry G. Webb, second
possible son of George and
Nancy, was born about 1832 in Virginia [census record]. I have found
him and wife Mary E. Stebbens in the Indiana census for 1860
[Grant Co.] and 1880 [Howard Co.]. He too may have enlisted in the
service during the Civil War. I do not have a date of death.
He married on 26 November 1865 in Grant Co., Indiana and to this union at
least three children were born: William, Lucy, and
Daniel Webb.
A death record for a Perry G. Webb is on file in Howard Co., Indiana with
a death date of 19 July 1914. This record states that he was born 1
January 1830 in Union Co., West Virginia and that his father's name was
Robert Webb. Either his family didn't know his father, or Perry
is not a son of George & Nancy (Rock) Webb. In the 1850 Grant
Co., Indiana census is a woman named Ruth Webb who has many
children, one named Robert. It could be possible that Perry
may have been a nephew of George & Nancy Webb.
All the information I
have on him was gathered through census, and may be incorrect due to the
information on the death certificate it may be that this is the Perry G.
Webb who married Mary E. Stebbens, and not my ancestor.
Floyd H. Webb was born about 1835 in
Virginia [census record]. He married Mary Jenkins on
28 September 1851 in Grant Co., Indiana. A Floyd Webb with a wife
Mary can be traced in the census, I will use this information, until
further proof is found to disprove or prove his descendants.
Sarah Jane Webb is my great-great grandmother.
She was born 22 March 1834 in Virginia, and died 11 March 1905.
Supposedly she is buried in the Burson/Pulley Cemetery next to her parents
George and Nancy Webb. A burial record was found for
Sarah, but not for her parents. Sarah married Jacob J. Hedrick
on 26 May 1857 in Huntington Co., Indiana. This marriage date leads
me to believe that her parents were dead by then. Sarah's aunt and
uncle married into the Bane family, Jacob's first wife was Mary Bane
whose siblings married Sarah Webb's aunt and uncle. These families
traveled from Virginia to Ohio then to Indiana together. Sarah and
Jacob had 5 children: William H., Andrew J.,
Clement V. [my great grandfather], John H.,
and Franklin B. Much is unknown by me of these Hedrick
boys. Sarah's relationship to George &
Nancy (Rock) Webb has been confirmed by a death record.
Henly W. Webb was born about 1837 in Ohio [census
record]. In 1860 he was living in Grant County with his wife
Susan Van Horn and daughter Nancy. According
to this census, Henly was a blacksmith. In 1870 he is still in Grant
County with his wife and children Adda, Edna,
Harlen, and Edith. In 1880 he is in
Grant County with wife and children Edna, Harlen,
Edith, and Rose. It is unknown by me
when Henly died.
George W[ashington?] Webb, Jr. was born about 1841
in Indiana [census record]. I have no further information on George.
Harriet M. Webb was born about March 1841 in
Indiana [census record]. On 25 November 1862 in Grant Co., Indiana
she married Joel Jackson. In 1860 Grant County census
she is living in the Buller home as a domestic servant. I did
not find her in 1870, but in 1880 she is living with her husband, and in
1900 she is still in Grant County with her husband and a foster son,
Harry W. Phillips. According to her death record, Harriet
was born 27 March 1842 and died in Grant Co., Indiana on 26 October 1918.
Her husband Joel was born 30 July 1831 and died 19 October 1903 in Grant
Co., Indiana. Harriet's relationship
to George & Nancy (Rock) Webb has been confirmed by a death record.
Mary A. Webb was born about 1845 in Indiana
[census record]. She married Bethuel Middleton on 1
November 1871 in Grant County. To this union 5 children were born:
Bethuel, Alica, Walter,
Anna, and John [the fist 2 children may be from
Bethuel's first marriage or illegitimate children of Mary's]. In
1860 Mary is living in the Joseph Shambaugh home as hired help, and
right next door is her sister Martha. In 1870 Mary is
still living in the same home, but her sister is no longer listed next
door. By 1880 she is living with her husband and the 5 children and
she can be found up to 1910 in Grant Co., Indiana.
No further info is known by me.
Martha E. Webb was born about 1846 in
Indiana [census record]. On 3 February 1876 in Grant County she
married William Snyder. In 1860 Martha is living in
the Sam Campbell home and next door in the Shambaugh
home is her sister Mary. In 1870 Martha is living as a
domestic servant in the Charles Bowman home. By 1880
she is living with her husband.
Stephen A. Webb was born about 1846 in
Indiana. I have no further information than this.
Andrew J. Webb was born about 1847 in
Indiana [census record]. On 17 October 1867 in Grant Co., Indiana he
married Melissa Lyons and had at least one child,
George W. Webb. Andrew may have been in the military during
the Civil War. There are many regiments with an Andrew Webb listed
within. In 1860 Andrew is living in the Sam Pulley
home. This may explain why his parents were buried in the
Burson/Pulley Cemetery, they were neighbors. Sam Pulley
may have helped take care of the family after their parents' death, and
kept Andrew in his home. In 1870 Andrew is living in Grant County
with his wife and son George W. No further info is known about him
by me.
Part of my search for
this family involves searching out death records. One death record
exists in Indiana for an Andrew J. Webb who would be the right age.
Upon viewing this record though, this Andrew who died 2 August 1906 was
the son of a Tillman Webb and Anna whose last name is illegible.
This family is in the 1850 census which eliminates this Andrew from being
the one in the George Webb household.
If you have any information on this Webb family while
they were in Indiana, I would love to hear from you. If you can help
me sort out who George Webb's [1803] parents were, don't hesitate to email
me!
