HEDRICK, Elias
E.
Marion Leader Tribune (Grant Co., Indiana); Saturday 14 February 1914
Elias E. Hedrick, 40 years of age, was
killed at his home in Lafontaine Friday by what was possibly the
accidental discharge of a shotgun. No one was in the room with Mr.
Hedrick when he received the fatal wound and he was never able to give an
explanation of the transaction. He was wounded at 11:20 a.m. and died
within thirty minutes from internal hemorrhage.
Mrs. Hedrick, wife of the man accidentally killed, was in the
kitchen getting dinner when she heard the shot in the sitting room.
Neighbors were summoned as quickly as possible and Dr. Dicken was called.
Hedrick said to him as he entered the house, "Dr. I am suffering
terribly." A hypodermic injection relieved the wounded man's pain.
Shortly before his death occurred he said in answer to a question, "I can
see light."
The shot from the 20-guage shotgun entered Hedrick's upper
abdomen possibly going through the stomach and passing in an upward
position into the lungs. While the skin was not powder burned the muzzle
of the gun was close, since the shot had not scattered but had torn one
large hole in the wall of the abdomen. It is the supposition that Hedrick
had taken the gun from its rack in preparation for using it and that
something was wrong with the gun and in attempting to find the cause it
was accidentally discharged.
Dr. G.G. Eckhart was called from this city to Lafontaine, the
physicians there regarding that possibly the man would survive the shock
and that there might be an opportunity to save his life by an operation
but the man was beyond surgical aid when Dr. Eckhart arrived.
Elias Hedrick formerly worked with his father who for many
years had a general store at Banquo. He was fairly well known in Marion,
having much business here. Some time ago he moved to Lafontaine and
conducted a grocery there but closed out this business last November and
since then had not been engaged in any business.

HEDRICK, Mary
Fannie (Walker) Ballard
Marion Daily Leader (Grant Co., Indiana); Thursday 24 November 1910
WELL KNOWN WOMAN OF VAN BUREN, DESPONDENT BECAUSE SHE
WAS ALONE IN THE WORLD, ENDED HER LIFE WITH ACID
Despondent because she was practically
alone in the world, having no near relatives, Mrs. Fannie Hedrick, aged
56, widow of the late Jacob Hedrick, committed suicide Thanksgiving
morning in Van Buren by drinking carbolic acid.
Little could be ascertained as to the motive other than
despondency. She was with her step-daughter, Mrs. Homer Oliver, on Second
street, and members of the family were astounded when she came staggering
into the sitting room shortly before 6 o'clock this morning and stated she
had taken carbolic acid.
Dr. Toney was called at once but the deadly acid had done its
work. She died about 9 o'clock after great effort had been made to
counteract the influence of the acid.
Mrs. Hedrick is said to have made no statement other than she
was tired of living and took the acid with the intention of ending her
life. She had no near relatives, but had a step-daughter and step-son,
the children of her second husband. Mr. Hedrick, her second husband, died
a little over a year ago. It is thought that she chose for ending her
life the day on which most people are joyous and happy for the reason she
could not endure recollections of happy days, which to her seemed past
forever.
Prior to her marriage to Mr. Hedrick, several years ago Mrs.
Hedrick was the widow of Dr. Ballard, once a well known physician of Van
Buren. She had lived in Van Buren a number of years.
Mrs. Hedrick, it is learned, lived at 1502 South Branson
street, Marion, and was only in Van Buren on a visit, going there two
weeks ago. She was a particular friend of Dr. and Mrs. R.A. Barnes of
Branson street and they were greatly shocked when told this morning of the
death of Mrs. Hedrick.
Mrs. Barnes said that since the death of Mr. Hedrick, Mrs.
Hedrick seemed despondent at times and altogether a different woman but
also had never dreamed of her committing suicide. Mr. Hedrick's estate
was somewhat involved at the time of his death but there was a means left
and it is hardly believed that financial difficulties could have caused
her act.
Mrs. Hedrick was a very proud member of the Christian Church
of Van Buren but since her residence in Marion has attended the First
Friends Church on account of its convenience. Mrs Hedrick was observed by
friends at the Methodist Church in Van Buren a week ago last Sunday and
since she scarcely ever attended that church the matter was commented on.
A woman of most excellent character and with no known cause
why she should take her life the case presents a great mystery. Her
residence in Marion has been only since the death of her late husband.
Her girlhood was spent in Ohio but early in life she came to Van Buren.
She reared the children of her first husband from infants and was to them
an excellent mother.
[NOTE--Mary signed her last will and testament just a
couple of weeks before her suicide on 8 November 1910, maybe she was
thinking ahead?--Amy Hedrick]
HEDRICK, Paul
David
--written by Amy Hedrick
Paul David Hedrick was born 8 September
1940 to Wordner David Hedrick and Viola Mae Harrell in Marion, Grant Co.,
Indiana. On 17 August 2003, at the age of 62, he passed away at home in
Jacksonville, Duval Co., Florida.
Due to the untimely death of my father, and my mother's
privacy, an official obituary was never printed in any newspapers, and
only close friends and relatives were made aware of his passing.
Paul spent his whole life growing up in Marion, school,
friends, jobs, etc. At the start of the Vietnam war, he was drafted into
the U.S. Army and stationed in Turkey to guard nuclear weapons. While
there he took many photos and collected souvenirs. Those photos are now in
my possession.
After his service was over he married Mary Ellen Shafer on 20
November 1966. To them two children were born, Scott Allen Hedrick now of
Jacksonville, Duval Co., Florida and Amy Lyn Hedrick, now of Waynesville,
Brantley Co., Georgia.
Paul studied to become a locksmith, and in 1987 realized his
dream of going into his own business, and bought H & T Locks in Brunswick,
Glynn Co., Georgia. He relocated his whole family and continued in life
there for about 10 more years. Later, he sold the business and moved to
Jacksonville, Duval Co., Florida with his wife and son.
Paul is survived by his wife; children; two grandchildren; two
brothers, Robert Hedrick of Gas City, Grant Co., Indiana and John Hedrick
of Jacksonville, Duval Co., Florida; one sister Esther Paschal of Griffin,
Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

SUICIDE OF MRS. HEADRICK NEAR BANQUO--Mrs. Pearl
Headrick took Strichnine After Visit to Fairmount.
DAUGHTER OF ISRAEL WIAND OF THIS CITY--Death Due to
Domestic Troubles It Is Said Died Tuesday.
Shortly after reaching her home,
three-quarters of a mile west of Banquo, Monday afternoon from a visit at
Fairmount, Mrs. Pearl Headrick, aged 35, wife of Elias Headrick, swallowed
a large quantity of strychnine and death resulted at 2 o'clock Tuesday
morning.
She gave no cause for her rash act, but it is supposed that
domestic difficulties led to her suicide.
She is a daughter of Israel Wiand, living at 1512 South Adams
street, this city and a brother of John Wiand, living at the same
address. Her sister, Mrs. Wesley Fowler, resides at Converse. Mrs. J.
Headrick lived in Marion most of her life before going to Banquo about
seven years of ago. Besides a father and brother she has numerous
relatives in this city. The relatives received messages this morning
telling of the suicide.
Mrs. Headrick and her husband returned home from Fairmount
yesterday afternoon about 2 o'clock. While the husband was at the barn
putting away the rig in which they had ridden from Fairmount, the woman
swallowed the poison. When the husband found her he sent to neighbors for
assistance and doctors were summoned.
When she was asked why she had taken the poison she only
replied:
"If you had gone through what I did you would well know the
reason."
The woman lingered until Tuesday morning at 2 o'clock. She
died without making any further statement. Relatives in this city were
shocked at the news of the suicide, and can not assign any cause. The
funeral took place Thursday afternoon.

HEDRICK,
William
The Warren Republican (Huntington Co., Indiana); Thursday 23 April
1891
Last Saturday morning the body of Wm.
Hedrick, who lived with his grandmother at Pleasant Plain, was found dead
in the corner of the fence along the road, a short distance east of Daniel
Groff's, in Jefferson Twp. It appears that Hedrick, whose age was about
eighteen years, came to Warren on Friday with two other young men named
Charles and Dan Adams, and became very much intoxicated, especially
Hedrick. They were afoot and did not start home till towards evening.
When they passed Col. Perdue's, Charles Adams was leading Hedrick, and a
short distance beyond the house the latter fell down in the road. Adams
came back and got Perdue to go and help him get Hedrick. Perdue says that
Hedrick was the drunkest man he ever saw. He helped start the boys on,
and Adams succeeded in getting Hedrick about five miles on the road
towards home and gave out. He left Hedrick by the fence, he [Hedrick]
telling him to go on home and he would come after awhile. On inquiry the
next morning Adams learned that Hedrick had not yet come home and he went
back to where he had left him and found him dead. The Coroner's inquest
resulted in finding that Hedrick's death was caused by whisky and
exposure. The funeral was held the next day, conducted by Rev. Albert
Smith, who preached an able sermon, and the remains were buried at Mt.
Etna.
