Notes for John BROUGHTON Sr.
John immigrated at age 20 in August 1635, when he boarded the Thomas at Gravesend (east of London), England. He arrived at Dorchester and listed himself as a planter and land speculator. He set out with fur traders for the Pilgrim settlement at Windsor. He was settled there by 1 May 1637, when the Connecticut General Court declared war against the Pequots. Ninety men from Hartford, Windsor and Wethersfield were commissioned. John was one of the 30 men from Windsor under the command of Capt. John Mason. He fought in the Battle of Mystic on May 26, and later sailed to Narragansett Bay to attack the main Pequot village. (Don Broughton from Mason, "Brief history, page 137, 141 of the Mass. Hist. Soc. Coll Series III Vol 6 page 38]
