Dora Creek is located on the western shores of Lake Macquarie, near Morisset. It is a community bordered on two sides by water, with Dora Creek on one side and Lake Eraring on the other.
Established in 1840 on the former lands of Percy Simpson's Eraring Estate, was the township of Newport, which is now known as Dora Creek, just north of Morisset. By 1870 only a dozen families lived in the area, which was supported by a store and school. The township was located at the junction of Dora Creek and Lake Macquarie and was essentially a port for the Cooranbong timber industry.
Cooranbong is nestled at the foothills of the Watagan Mountains and is located just off the Sydney-Newcastle F3 freeway.
