The following articles were written and researched by Grace Douglass & Laurel Legge and published in their book 'Along the Windsor Richmond Road' 1985 (ISBN 0 9589831 0 0 and ISBN 0 9589831 3 5) and is subject to copyright. Written permission is held from the late author Grace Douglass for the writer to publish contents via the Internet. However, although this book is in the public domain, it still remains copyrighted material and may not be copied for any reason without permission. I do not have the right to give permission to others to reprint the book. I was only given permission to put extracts online. All copyrights stay with Grace Douglass & Laurel Legge and whoever they appointed, for control of the book. Under no circumstances may it be reprinted for profit.
Extractions of parts of the information for personal use with references to the book as the source is encouraged.
It should be noted that since the book was published over twenty years ago, that a lot of the material in the books have been superseeded by later research, some of which can ben seen at my complete Rootsweb database at Amanda Taylor's Genealogy.
If you have a particular interest in any of these people of whom I have not yet transcribed (e.g where a link does not appear under their name), please do not hesitate to contact me as I would be only to happy to transcribe that particular person as a matter of priority for you.
No Line is just Ezzy, it must have a relative Spouse Family, marrying into, or at least having an influence upon that Line. In the first generation the two main Spouse Families were those of Lamb and Bootle. In the second generation there were a total of seventeen. Some of these Spouse Families are also cross-related, because of their own intermarriage, or re-marriage.
There is much work still to be done on the subject matter covered by this part of our Family History. Unfortunately not all the early families of the Colony of New South Wales are as clearly defined and as easily traceable as the Ezzy Family are. Some of the more common names such as Allen, Taylor, Cross, Roberts, etc., only compound the problem.
We have endeavoured to set out in the following pages Mini Histories of the Spouse Families, firstly so that you each may know the 'other half' of your particular Line and secondly to give those who are particularly interested in the subject, a base, or starting point, should they wish to delve further into the matter. For this reason, in regard to the Family Lines that we have not been able to complete at this time, we have set out, first what we know about the particular family in question, and secondly what we 'think' might be the complete picture, or else the line of thought that we are following at present, and the reason for our action. However, I think I should point out that some of the early relationships will never be known, for a great variety of reasons. Unfortunately frustrating, but nevertheless a well known fact.
In the early days of settlement the inhabitants were of two classes -- convict, or free. The word 'free' covered a number of possibilities -- military, wife and family of military persons, wife and family of a convict, and a sprinkling of settlers who came of their own choice. Before long, however, there were other 'types' of persons who came free. Firstly there were those who came as Assisted Immigrants and had their passage paid for them (a class of arrival that is quite easy to trace as they are very well documented in a most informative way), and secondly those who paid their own passage. There were three classes of paying passengers - First or Cabin Class, Saloon or 2nd Class, and Steerage. Unless the paying passenger came on a vessel that left very informative passenger lists, then you had better hope that your Spouse was a convict! They at least were mustered, counted and documented -- for the most part at least.
How to use this section and apply it to your own Line. Select your First Spouse Family, by referring in the Index to the name of the Father, of the man or woman who married into the Ezzy Family -- i.e. The wife of Joseph Ezzy was Sarah Allen daughter of Charles Allen, so persons interested in this Line go to the chapter on Charles Allen. Charles Allen and his wife, Elizabeth Taylor were not, however, the original arrival in the Colony, so you will find in this chapter a second referral to the Family of Edward Allen (Father of Charles) and to Robert Taylor (Father of Elizabeth). Not all Lines, however, are multiple ones, some like Sullivan, Witney and Fitzroy are single entries.
In some cases some of the information contained in this part of the Ezzy Family History, may cause an embarrassment or annoyance to persons outside the Ezzy Family who may chance to read this book at a future date. They may feel that some of the facts and information that we disclose should have been left locked in that closet with the 'skeletons'. However, this is a researcher's guide and if it is necessary to disclose these facts for a descendant to be able to trace his or her way back to the beginning, then we have had no choice, but to disclose them. All the facts stated are contained in official records, and for the most part could have been read in the pages of the early newspapers, along with your morning cup of tea. Or perhaps it would have been a billy of tea??
"Along the Windsor Richmond Road" is the Early History of the Ezzy Family in the Colony, and for that reason we have given only a brief coverage to the Founder Members of the Spouse Families even though in some cases we have considerable information on the various sons and daughters other than the particular one that married into the Ezzy Family. We also have Australia wide contacts with persons quite outside the Ezzy Family, but who nevertheless have a particular interest in one of our Spouse Families, and we will be only to happy to share this information with others interested in the subject in order that the Early History of the Hawkesbury District in general may be preserved for future generations. Similarly we would also like to hear from those persons who feel that the conclusions that we have drawn about a particular person or family are not entirely as they should be. In that way, errors in our records -- and possibly your own also, can be adjusted and a more correct entry be made.
It is our intention to continue with research into these various Spouse Families, and give as complete a record as it is possible to make with the swiftly vanishing information that is now available at this point of time. It is also our intention to make available to the Windsor Library any progress that we may make from time to time so that any person interested in a particular subject may find there at some future date, more up-to-date information than is contained here in this section of the Ezzy Family History.
