Helen married Albert Wichman (brother of Edward Wichman whom my father raised) -- eloping in defiance of her mother's strong objections to Al, whom, she said, was "a broomstick who had nothing." Helen and Al lived in Topeka for a while where Al had a job. Bad feelings over it all gave way after a time, and Uncle Carl bought them a small farm east of his own.

In 1991, Helen had a mild heart attack.
Helen and Al Wichman celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year (1992).
As of September 1992, Helen weighs only 97 lbs. and has shrunk 3 inches.
Helen is wearing a Nitro patch. She has had a hysterectomy in recent years.
Helen had to make several trips to the hospital in 1992. Her heart was in such a weakened condition that it would not pump the fluid buildup from her lungs. She was required to make periodic visits to the hospital to clear her lungs.
On September 28, 1992 Helen died. Funeral services were held at 10:00 am on Thursday October 1 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Eudora, Kansas. Rev. Paul Witmer had the memorial service. Winifred Gallup was the organist. Casket bearers were Trig Oleson, Kenneth Whaley, Larry Schaake, Bob McCabria, Dennis Thome, and Clifford Neis. She was laid to rest at Eudora Cemetery in Eudora, Kansas.

Services for Helen Amelia Wichman, 82, Eudora, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Eudora, with the Rev. Paul Winter officiating. Burial will be in Eudora Cemetery.
Mrs. Wichman died Monday, Sept. 28, 1992, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 20, 1910, in Douglas County, the daughter of Carl and Martha Gerstenberger Altenbernd. She had been a resident of Eudora all of her life. Mrs. Wichman attended public schools in Eudora and was a graduate of Lawrence Business College. She was an active member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, charter member of the Keota Club, a member of the 1900 NOW Club, all of Eudora, and the Knife and Fork Club, Lawrence. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, quilting and handwork.
She married Albert D. Wichman on Aug. 20, 1932, in Topeka. He survives of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Dona Mae Wichman of the home and Norma Schmille, Lawrence; two brothers, Herb Altenbernd and Homer Altenbernd, both of Lawrence; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, which is handling arrangements. The family suggests memorials to St. Paul's United Church of Christ or the American Heart Fund. Memorials may be sent in care of the mortuary.2
