---------------------

Dona is mentally retarded, but is very perceptive in limited ways. When shopping with Vianne last Christmas (1991), she decided to buy a toaster. When Vi inquired as to why she needed the toaster she replied that soon she would need a place of her own and she needed to plan ahead. Dona understands that her parents aren't well and at some point she will need to make arrangements to live on her own. Dona provides a lot of comfort to her parents and helps to care for them. When Helen was in the hospital, Norma would come over in the morning and lay out Al's medicine for the day. Dona would see that he took the right group of pills at the right time.

Dona moved in with her sister Norma for awhile after her parents death. She later moved to her own apartment in a supervised housing complex.
